Laura Cargile Hooper died Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Retreat Nursing Home where she had lived for several months. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County and had lived for over seventy years on Bethel Church Road. Laura Hooper was 91 years old and the daughter of the late Nora Jane Davis Cargile and Lovic Eugene Cargile.
Mrs. Hooper worked for many years at the sewing room and retired to enjoy her family and friends and her hobbies of quilting and gardening. Laura Hooper was a 50+ member of Bethel Baptist Church where she taught the adult Sunday school class for many years. She was always active in her Church’s Bible School and youth programs where she displayed her sincere affection for children. She cherished her Church family and was a devout Christian and an avid student of the Bible. She lived her life so that her faith in God, love of family, friends, community, and country were evident to all those who knew her well.
Mrs. Hooper was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Thomas Coy Hooper and by her oldest son, Thomas Coy Hooper, Jr. Brother, J.D. Cargile also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Cliff Pilgrim of Grayson; daughters, Sybil Bentley of Turtle Cove, Mary Wingard of Mansfield, and Cathy Snook of Thomasville; and by her son, Cecil Hooper of Monticello. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, whom she adored: Butch Batchelor of Derry, NH; Paige Gray of Jacksonville, FL; Bobby Ferris of Yatesville; Monica Cochran, Barry Hooper and Stephen Hooper, all of Monticello; and Sam Snook of Thomasville.
Granddaughters-in-law, Angie Hooper, Amberly Ferris, Bethany Hooper, and Heather Hall held a special place in her heart. She had ten great grandchildren: Hailey Hooper, Kim Batchelor, Katiel Gray, Sophia Gray, Rachel Wilkerson, Jesse Wilkerson, Joe Wilkerson, Alicia Montanez, Stephanie Montanez, and Christian Montanez. She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Sara Ivey of Monroe, Mary McCullough of Stone Mountain, and Gene Cargile of Snellville; and by her beloved friend and caregiver, Mary Ann Shirley.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Bethel Baptist Church in Monticello. Burial will be held in the Hooper Family cemetery in Monticello. Rev. Mike Jorgenson will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Jordan Funeral Home.
