JOB DESCRIPTION

Hours of Work:21hours per week to be worked over 3 days (one to be Friday, the others by agreement),

9am – 4.30pmincludes 30 mins unpaid lunch break

Flexible working hours and additional hoursmay be requested from time to time in order to provide cover

Salary: £9.45 - £10.52 per hr.

£10,319 - £11,488 for 21 hours. £18,182 - £20,240pro-rata

Locations:The ‘Park Club’ Day Service,138 Cowick Street, St Thomas,

The ‘Lane Club’ Day Service, Sycamores Centre, Mount Pleasant

Working with: Older people with memory difficulties Age UK Exeter staff and volunteers and health and social care personnel.

Job Purpose

To organise and take responsibility for the safe running and quality of the day service on the days worked, with the guidance of the Dementia Day Service Manager

Main Duties

  • To ensure an enjoyable and stimulating day for service users within a friendly and safe environment; observing Health & Safety guidelines
  • To appropriately deploy, supervise and support the Day Service Assistants and volunteer team who work within the service
  • To promote and maintain high standards of care, sensitively responding to people as individuals and demonstrating person centred care.
  • To organise and introduce activities on a one-to-one or smallgroup basis which encompass the social, recreational, physical and emotional needs of service users
  • To encourage service users to maintain skills through active participation in the daily running of the service depending on individual capability
  • To support service users to meet the agreed outcomes in their individual care plans, and to keep plans updated
  • To assist service users with their personal care needs as required
  • To assist in the induction and ongoing support of volunteers
  • To liaise with service users’ families and external agencies as required
  • To regularly feedback and liaise with the Dementia Day Service Manager on matters/issues relevant to the well-being of individual service users
  • To keep records up to date, including service user and daily attendance records; undertake other administrative tasks as required
  • To observe Age UK Exeter’s policies and practice guidance; in particular to maintain confidentiality and adhere to the charity’s Safeguarding Policy
  • To take part in own supervision sessions and attend meetings and training courses / sessions as required
  • To contribute to the ongoing development and quality of the service
  • To help to provide cover for other members of the Day Services team in times of holiday and sickness
  • To assist in transporting service users to and from the day services as and when necessary (normally provided by team of volunteer drivers)
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the post

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check

Travel:A full driving licence and access to a vehicle on your days of work is essential. A mileage allowance is paid for essential travel.

Probationary Period: Six months from commencement of post.

References: Appointment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references

and DBS check at enhanced level

Annual Leave:6 weeks including Bank Holidays on a pro-rata basis.

Pension:Staff aged between 22 and state retirement age earning above the threshold for income tax will be automatically enrolled into the Zurich Age UK pension scheme based on a 5% contribution by both employer and employee. Staff may opt out of the scheme within 30 days of receiving the scheme’s joiner’s pack for a full refund of any contribution made. Other staff may opt to join the scheme upon request.

Notice:One month's notice will be required in writing on either side. One week during the probationary period.

Day Service Organiser

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Experience of working in a health or social care setting; preferably including experience of working with people with a dementia
  • Good understanding of dementia illnesses and their effects on individuals and families
  • Ability to provide appropriate support and supervision to staff and volunteers on a day to day basis
  • Imagination and ability to design and implement social, recreational and “daily living skills” activities on a one-to-one and group basis
  • Ability to support service users in their personal care with sensitivity and respect
  • A genuine regard for and an interest in older people
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work calmly with individuals in distress
  • Energy and enthusiasm and can demonstrate ability to work on own initiative and as proactive part of a team
  • A commitment to empowering and enabling others; balancing rights and risks
  • IT literate –experience of using internet, email, Microsoft Office; ability to use organisational database with training
  • Commitment to equal opportunities and understanding of principles of confidentiality and safeguarding adults
  • Full driving licence and access to a car for work

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working with people with a dementia
  • Previous experience of working with and supporting volunteers
  • Knowledge of group dynamics
  • Knowledge and experience of care planning process
  • Knowledge of local services relevant to the user groups, both statutory and voluntary
