Appendix 2: Qualitative interview questions

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. We are always trying to improve the hiring and recruitment process by gaining insight into reasons why teacher candidates outside of the state of Kentucky would come work for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) and the struggles/successes associated with acclimating to a new school, district, and state. Your feedback is critical for us to determine what is and what is not working in recruiting and retaining new talent into the district. Your responses will remain confidential and anonymous. Survey data will be combined and summarized in a manner that will further protect your anonymity. Additionally, the survey will be used to learn ways employees who are alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) or out–of-state colleges can help assist in district recruitment and retention strategies to better support new hires who are from another state or an HBCU graduate.

Data from the survey will be used to seek answers to the following process and impact questions:

Process Questions

·  How are teacher candidates being recruited?

·  What are some of the major reasons out-of-state recruits come work for JCPS?

·  What are the demographics of newly hired JPCS teachers?

·  Where are newly hired teachers being placed?

Impact Questions

·  What is the impact of alumni focus groups within the district on recruitment and retention of highly qualified applicants?

·  How long are recruits staying in their assigned locations?

·  What is the impact of the school assignment on retention?

·  What are the retention, mobility and attrition rates within JCPS?

·  What organizational structures at the school level contribute to increased retention and decreased attrition and/or mobility in schools with high minority enrollment and/or high F/R lunch %?
