JOB TITLE: Outdoor Education Officer (Adventure Activity Safety)

Fixed term - 18 months

SALARY: £28,392 – £31,104 (HC8)

LOCATION: High Life Highland, Inverness,

RESPONSIBLE TO: Outdoor Activities Manager

JOB PURPOSE: Designing and managing a safety management system for all off-site excursions and adventurous activities. Build the capacity of school and community staff to deliver Adventurous Activities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

1.  Secure an Adventure Activity Licensing Authority license’s for HC and HLH on an annual basis

2.  Manage the implementation of safety policies, using the MIS system as a key tool.

3.  Management of support staff towards agreed outcomes often in locations remote from base.

4.  Manage a system to monitor the provision of adventurous activities by teachers etc in the field by on-site inspection and appraisal.

5.  Manage a system to monitor adventurous activity equipment and the appropriate deployment of coaches/instructors by HC and HLH staff.

6.  Identify needs and inform a CPD programme for staff and volunteers of HC and HLH

7.  Review and update relevant policies such as Procedures and Guidance for all Off Site Excursions and the Outdoor Education Safety Document

8.  Create and review adventurous activity generic risk assessments

9.  To liaise with other organisations and groups to inform our practice regarding safety of Adventure Activity.

10. Manage the delivery of training and assessment for local accreditation courses and site specific training.

11. To provide technical advice to colleagues, staff and activity leaders/organisers on adventure activities.

12. Contribute to the development and delivery of High Life Highland operational plans

Other Duties:

PERSON SPECIFICATION

JOB TITLE: Outdoor Education Officer (Adventure Activity Safety)

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES:

In order to be able to carry out the duties of this post effectively and safely, candidates will be able to provide evidence of the following:-

1.  EXPERIENCE

·  Experience managing safety in adventure activities for a complex and diverse audience.

·  Extensive current experience of Adventure Activities.

2.  EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

·  Good standard of education with the ability to communicate effectively in all mediums,

·  Demonstrate critical thinking and a solution focused approach.

·  Highly skilled in a number of Outdoor Activities. The post holder should hold a number of higher NGB level qualifications. Minimum of MIA/MIC , BCU Level 4 (UKCC Level 2 with 5*) paddle sports discipline and a range of others such as Mountain Bike Leader, BASI level 2, Senior Sailing Instructor etc. Due to the diverse nature of work it would be desirable to hold a selection of qualifications.

3.  SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES GENERAL

·  Comprehensive knowledge of safety management in Outdoor Activity.

·  Extensive current knowledge of a range of Adventurous Activities.

·  Demonstrate critical thinking and a solution focused approach.

·  Experience/knowledge of delivering technical advice on adventurous activity.

·  Good attention to detail.

·  Track record in management of resources towards agreed outcomes and within budget.

·  Time management skills and clear focus on delivery.

4.  SKILLS/ABILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE POST

·  Good knowledge of ICT solutions

·  Ability to manage and delegate to ensure efficiency.

·  Driving licence and/or access to personal transport.

·  Experience of providing adventure activity technical advice and creating risk assessments

5.  INTERPERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS

·  Good communicator both verbally and written.

·  Good liaison and negotiation skills.

·  Able to build and maintain relationships at all organisational levels.
