Knowledge translation and public engagement

·  Advisor to Department of Health Tobacco Policy Team: helped set up national network of stop-smoking services; regular input to decision making on the full range of policy issues from harm reduction to pricing and standard packaging using data from the Smoking Toolkit Study and other sources

·  Advisor to Public Health England Communications Team: helped design and establish Stoptober campaign and overall communications strategy since 2008; regular input to communications policy, ongoing collaboration on development and implementation of digital interventions to promote and aid cessation (e.g. StopAdvisor), ongoing provision of key data on smoking and smoking cessation from The Smoking Toolkit Study to evaluate campaigns and model elements of the communications strategy

·  Advisor to Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority: regular input to decision making on issues from licensing of nicotine products to changes in indications, primarily using data from the Smoking Toolkit Study

·  Advisor to English NHS Stop-Smoking Services: continued advice and free consultancxy to the services on a near daily basis with regard to configuration of services, type of behavioural support provided and medication options

·  Founder and Honorary Co-Director of National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training: responsible for knowledge transfer and evaluation (this organisation was set up by the DH and has trained 16,000+ stop smoking advisors, treating some 700,000 smokers per year)

·  Trustee of the stop-smoking charity, QUIT: responsible for knowledge transfer and quality control

·  Member of NICE Programme Development committees: helped produce guidance on brief advice, behyaviour change, stop-smoking services, and tobacco harm reduction

·  Training stop smoking advisors in UK, Canada, China, and the Middle East

·  Editorial board of Treatobacco.net, a global resource of health professionals on effective treatments for tobacco dependence

·  Author of ‘The SmokeFree Formula (Orion)’ a book that aims to bring the science of stopping to smokers, launched in December 2013 with translation contracts agreed so far in Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Norwegian, Romanian, Turkish, French, Italian and German

·  Regular (at least monthly) television, radio, newspaper and magazine interviews for UK and overseas media

Enablement

·  Mentoring and supervision of clinicians, postgraduate students and researchers in Argentina, China, Germany, India, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Portugal, Taiwan, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Uruguay: this includes setting up and supervising joint projects, hosting visiting academics, clinicians and students and overseas visits for discussions and supervision.
