Staged for fun, Pipestem State Park Amphitheater announces variety of outdoor entertainment in 2013
PIPESTEM, W.Va. – Pipestem Resort State Park has a variety of entertainment planned for the 2013 summer season, from a community band and local music school productions to bluegrass and gospel music evenings. Pipestem’s 525-seat amphitheater is a summer outdoor venue. Show attendees can also bring blankets for additional hillside seating. A refreshment concession stand is onsite.The venue is family friendly and no alcohol is allowed. A minimal attendance fee helps to defray show costs and some evenings are without fee. All shows are open to the public. All amphitheater shows begin at 8p.m.

East River Mountain Town Band
East River Mountain Town Band is a community band that performs an eclectic mix of classical, popular and patriotic concert band music. This ensemble of 60-plus members is directed by Concord University graduate and retired Mercer County music teacher Mel Saunders. Admission is free and the entertainment is open to the public.

Summers County K.I.D.S.
A dramatic stage performance by youth from the Summers County area, Summers County K.I.D.S. will be performing “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children 6-12 years.

Maurice Ulmer Group
The Maurice Ulmer Group has been rocking the two Virginias for several years with classic rock, blues and rockabilly. Original music composed by Maurice Ulmer is on the compact disc “Rock of the Alleghenies.” The band includes Maurice Ulmer on guitar, bass and vocals; Cathy Lowry on keyboards, flute, recorder, bass and vocals; Steve Herald on drums; and Jimmy McCutchen on guitar, bass and vocals. Members of the band live in Covington, Va. and Clifton Forge, Va. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12.

Carla Bragg, Southern Gospel Singer/Songwriter
Bragg holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Concord University, majoring in both psychology and sociology, Bragg followed her heart and family musical roots, and began a weekly radio broadcast after graduation. She writes, produces and sings gospel music. Her CDs include “God Is a Good God…All the Time,” “The Calling,” “Song in My Soul” and “In the Garden.” An award-winning vocalist, Bragg has performed throughout West Virginia and surrounding states. Acoustic Crossroads (A.C.R.)
Acoustic Cross Roads is a New River Valley-based band that covers a wide variety of musical styles: country, rock and blues. A.C.R. started off years ago as an acoustic duo, but today the band is a five-piece electric band with vocals that mimic notable singers like Luke Bryan, LynyrdSkynyrd, Johnny Cash and Blake Shelton. Band members include Steve Stewart - lead vocals, guitar; Dale Summers - lead guitar, vocals; Tommie Lee Stewart - vocals, keyboard; Mark Skidmore - bass guitar, backing vocals; and Allen Meadows – drums, percussion, and vocals. Stages Music
An evening of entertainment by several student groups of Stages Music School of Princeton, W.Va. Featured performance will include The Graham Twins,11-year-old singer/musicians who play a mix of country, pop and oldies.Miss Behavin,’ an all-girl band of teenagers that play rock and pop music. The Heartbreakers also are an all-girl band of 11- and 12-year-old girls playing county and pop music. Time Machine is a classic rock band that plays way beyond their years. Hanna Belle is a singing duo of two firecrackers that entertain with gigantic voices.

Geology! Rocks!
Meet Geologist Ken Ashton at the amphitheater for a presentation on geology of West Virginia.The evening focuses on how the land we now know as West Virginia originally formed. Images around the state illustrate the importance of West Virginia's hundreds of millions of years of geologic history to our present mineral wealth, economy, breathtaking scenery, and the geology of the particular park. The presentation answers questions such as: How did the mountains form? Can dinosaur remains be found in West Virginia? Can I find gold here? Did glaciers ever cover the state?Ashton will lead a “rock ’n walk” on Aug. 9 departing from Mountain Creek Lodge at 10 a.m. and follow the Bluestone River exploring. Both programs are fee-free and open to the public.
