October 10 Auburn Art Walk Brings Season to a Close
The final Auburn Art Walk of 2013 will be held from 6 to 9 pm on Thursday, October 10 in businesses throughout Old Town and Downtown Auburn. Enjoy an evening of live music and artist receptions in more than two dozen businesses. The art is for sale, and after the Art Walk will hang for two months. A free shuttle connects all venues every 20 minutes.
The Arts Building Gallery presents the 20th Annual Autumn Art Studios Tour Preview Show Gala Reception the same evening from 4 to 6 pm in the Main Gallery with seventy-five Placer County artists participating this year. The Preview Show is the perfect place to plan your itinerary for the Studios Tour, which takes place November 8-10. Studios Tour three-day Passports will also be on sale during the evening. New this year, the $10 Passport offers raffle prizes of $100 in “Art Bucks” for tour goers. Visit for Passport details, a list of participating artists and other tour planning tips.The fall edition of PlacerArts’ Perspectives on Arts quarterly is the official tour guide to the Autumn Art Studios Tour, containing a map with locations and directions and indicating those artists conducting live demonstrations.
Also at The Arts Building, the Dorothy Crites Gallery features a Batik Retrospective and the works of Helen W. Phillips entitled, Journey of Adventure and Discovery, while The Alley Gallery features Del Oro student photographers’ works from their 2013 Southwest travels. Not to be missed is the Grand Opening of the cooperative DownstairsGallery! and newly refurbished Clay Arts Studio featuring “Artists in Cahoots” Larry Ortiz and John Kennedy with ceramics and Raku ware; Jim Lee with sculpture; Linda Green’s and Max Redpath-Kennedy’s paintings, drawings, handmade books and cards. Live music by Midyne, food, drink, door prizes and a raffle: including art supplies and lessons from Linda Green and the Clay Arts Studio artists, round out the evening’s program.
Three first time artists this year, all from Auburn, are Katie O’Sullivan with encaustic art at Cabe’s 958; Annie Hess with leather-wrapped jewelry at Jumbo Giant for one night only, and at The Domes during business hours is Julien Caruso with water-based pigment paintings.
Judy Mayfield, a ceramic artist for 17 years and more recent fused glass artist with a studio and gallery in Grass Valley, is showing at Amber Collection. Her work is inspired by her extensive travels as a former airline stewardess and her affinity with the native art of the Hopi in the southwest and the indigenous people of Peru and Mexico. She specializes in highly-decorative functional art. All her ceramic pieces are high fired and food safe. “My latest venture into dichroic fused glass jewelry is very exciting and I love the glow of light and color it emits.”
Michael Kent Murphy, local architect and Autumn Art Studios Tour artist, is showing paintings at Monkey Cat Restaurant. KazHuette with wood, concrete and ceramic works is at Meritage Motors, and Craig Stephens, local master oil painter, is featured at Sierra Moon Goldsmith. The Christian Science Reading Room presents the photographs of Dan Ernest while Ordaz Gallery features Ted Conrad’s colored pencil pieces and oil paintings by David Conrad, son of owner Frank Ordaz.
Cool resident, Maria Soto Bigelow, presents European Landscapes at Auburn Naturopathic Medicine. Maria is a self-taught photographer who shoots and develops film and prints in a darkroom and says, “To see in color is natural – to see in black and white is magic!” She also uses digital. Karen Burns, of Granite Bay, brings digital photography and mixed media to Studio 49 and at Club Car, the theme is “Trees’ featuring the works of three local artists and venue employees. Kate Kendrickson, originally from Sheridan, Wyoming, studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and Design and shows acrylics and oils; Kaitlin Kahn, who moved from the bay area two years ago and also studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and Design, presents graphite and mixed media, while Kelly Baxter, originally from southern California, now residing in Cool, studied at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design shows watercolor and charcoal.
Auburn Old Town Gallery presents A Confluence of Style: Collaborative works of member artists in various media with David Wright providing guitar and vocals. Other group shows include Reflections by the Placer Artists League (PAL) at the Auburn City Hall with various media; six students of Thien Dao with ceramic works at Old Library Art Studios (OLAS); students of Tracy Owens at Studio Eight02; studio artists at Southside Art Center in Fall Colors with music by Southside Ensemble, and many artists, many media at The Golden Swann.
Live music provided by the Auburn Arts Commission includes Michael Cain bringing marimba toMeritage Motors; the eclectic Purdon’s Crossing at Central Square; Auburn Irish Session with authentic Irish music at Herschel Young Park and Michael Murphy’s Burning Man Berserker on the streets of Old Town.
