Seventh Grade English/ Language Arts

Course Prospectus

It is a pleasure to welcome you to 7th grade. In this class, “students will be introduced to critical thinking across genres, cultures, and time in order to analyze and interpret complex, grade appropriate texts, resources, and ideas. Using analytical skills, students will create precise, cohesive, and mechanically sound work that is expressive, argumentative, critical, and informative” (CMS, Language Arts Course Description). Students will also reflect on their practice to set and work towards personal and academic goals.

We will use a variety of text including Holt McDougal Literature, Interactive Reader, Warriner’s Handbook (grammar), SpringBoard, and NY Times Upfront Magazine. Students will be required to purchase their own copies of the following: Tangerine by Edward Bloor, The Omnivore’s Dilemma Young Readers Edition by Michael Pollan, Nothing But The Truth by Avi and The Pearl by John Steinbeck.

Grading:

Our classrooms are set up so that students will learn and work independently and collaboratively. It is expected that all assignments will be completed and turned in as required. In the event of an absence(s), arrangements for completing the work should be made within five (5) school days of the date of the student’s return to school. Arrangements should include a schedule for completion of the work. It is the student’s responsibility to make the arrangements with the teacher for late AND missing work. If a student fails to turn in any assignment on the due date, a grade of “0” will be recorded in Power School. Students may be assigned to attend the Academic Assistance Program (AAP), Language Arts Recharge, or before-school tutoring in order to complete missing work. These are also excellent opportunities to receive group instruction, prepare for tests, and make up assignments. All assignments will be completed and turned in each quarter.
Grades are weighted as follows:

·  Formal Assessments 65%

o  Test and Major Projects 100%

·  Informal Assessments 35%

o  Homework 10%

o  Quizzes 90%
