An ASUCD Senate Bill to create an avenue for ASUCD events to be vetted by The Gender and Sexuality Commission so that all ASUCD events are overall more inclusive.

BACKGROUND: On February 25th, 2016, an incident at the “ASUCD Block Party” relating to cultural insensitivity sparked a bylaw amendment to give the Ethnic and Cultural Affairs Commission the ability to review and make recommendations for all ASUCD hosted events with the intent to provide screening for ethnically appropriative events. By adding an additional set of eyes, ASUCD can strive to become an increasingly inclusive space for people of all identities. To further increase the inclusivity of ASUCD and its events, The Gender and Sexuality Commission adds an additional vetting process in all areas relating to GASC. GASC’s purview spans over all communities on campus; by enumerating this ability explicitly, all members of ASUCD are given the option to screen their events through GASC to create the most inclusive space they can.

Section 1. The ASUCD Senate hereby amends Section 204E(7) of the ASUCD Bylaws as follows:

204.COMMISSIONS OF THE ASUCD SENATE

(7)The Gender and Sexuality Commission (GASC) shall: (1) actively promote awareness of gender and sexuality issues, as well as prevention of sexual assault, through outreach efforts, publicity drives, and special projects; (2) work with campus resources pertaining to gender, sexuality, and rape prevention education in order to improve these efforts; (3) assist in the organization and coordination of educational programs concerning gender, sexuality, sexual assault and sexual harassment; (4) review and make recommendations to the ASUCD Senate and relevant ASUCD Commissions on gender, sexuality, and sexual assault issues and programs at UC Davis and throughout the UC system; (5) review, consider, and make recommendations on all legislation related to gender, sexuality, and sexual assault to the ASUCD Senate. The Gender and Sexuality Commission shall be made up of nine (9) voting members and up to four (4), but no fewer than (2), alternate members at the discretion of the Chairperson of Interviewing Committee.

a.The Gender and Sexuality Commission (GASC) has the ability to review and make recommendations for all ASUCD hosted events. Prior to the purchase of materials and signing of contracts, all events can be subject to review by GASC to ensure that all activities are screened for all subjects under the purview of The Gender and Sexuality Commission including, but not limited to issues relating to intersectionality and marginalized identities.
