2007 Daylight Savings Time Changes

Here are some important information regarding the DST changes starting this year.

Microsoft products affected by the DST legislation

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

Microsoft Exchange Server

Microsoft Office Outlook

Microsoft Office Live Meeting

Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Microsoft SQL Server Notification Services

Microsoft Entourage

This document will discuss Microsoft Windows operating systems only. If your location uses any other Microsoft product listed above, you will need to research its remediation.

Supported Microsoft OS

Windows Vista

Windows XP SP2

Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 SP1

Windows Embedded for Point of Service

Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs

This means you need to manually address the DST changes on your windows OS NOT listed above. This typically includes Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 servers Windows XP and Windows XP with SP1.

How to manually update DST information

There are two ways to manually update the DST information on non-supported windows machines. These updates require the logged on user be a local administrator.

  1. Use a script I copied from Microsoft. The files are TZupdate.reg, refreshTZinfo.vbs, and dst2007update.cmd. Just run dst2007update.cmd which will call the other two files. These files are located on \\dscapp1\apps\2007dst folder. Just run \\dscapp1\apps\2007dst\dst2007update.cmd . This is on the ADM domain.
  2. Use a utility called TZedit.exe to edit the timezone information AND start the TimeDate GUI and reselect the correct timezone and apply the changes. This is very important as the OS will NOT know of the changes unless you refresh the timezone information. I have a copy of TZedit.exe located on \\dscapp1\apps\2007dst folder.

See for details.

Updating Supported Windows Versions

There are two scenarios.

  1. The machine is setup with Automatic Update enabled. All workstations on the ADM domain are automatically setup with the Automatic Update enabled.
  2. Manually run the Windows Update and make sure you select KB931836. This came out on 2/14/07.

What happens if a computer is not updated?

Windows machines not updated will be one hour off during the week(s) between the new schedule and the old schedule. This will affect Groupwise, documents with time stamp, and any user application that rely on correct time.
