Dear Parents and Students,

The second semester will be here before we know it and the Civil War and Reconstruction course will begin. On November 6th many of you attended a meeting here at Iroquois where I explained an opportunity that your son or daughter will have to take this course for college credit at a substantial savings approximately 1/3 of the cost of the course on campus. As part of Erie Community College’s advanced studies division your son or daughter can earn (3) college credits while enrolled in the course. Upon successfully completing the course in June 2014 the student can request a college transcript showing the course number, description, and proof of credits. They do not have to be attending ECC to qualify, nor do they have to be planning on attending ECC at all. This credit is accepted throughout New York State through the SUNY system and if the student decides to transfer to another school, the credits will follow the same as any other credits earned after enrollment.Forms to sign up are available from Mr. Davison or on line at then look to the right and click on the link “high school students”. The next screen will direct you to click on the left link for Advanced Studies. From there you can complete an online application for advanced studies. The required course name and number is ECC HI 231 – 4B, Civil War and Reconstruction. Once registered the college will take care of billing in early February.

The second item is a trip for students in the class to Gettysburg PA on Wednesday April 9 through Friday April 11 2014. Because of the need to secure hotel reservations and guest presenters in Gettysburg,it is important for me to gage the interest level and get some idea of the number of students interested in participating. No money is necessary at this time and no one is obligated to sign up for this enrichment activity.Students will be asked to make a decision during the first or second week of classes so that planning can continue. A non refundable deposit of $100.00 will be due in class by Friday February 7, 2014. The second payment of $100 will be due on March 1, 2014 and final payments by April 1, 2014. Like everything else you purchase, the costs have risen somewhat from two years ago (the last time this opportunity was offered). The greatest increase comes in the form of transportation. Final costs depend upon the number of students participating. At present it is anticipated that we will have 30 students traveling and the expected cost will be @$340.00 per student. This includes transportation by coach bus, two meals, all admissions to museums and fees to several presenters. I’ve included a copy of the tentative schedule. If you need further information please feel free to contact me here at school. My e-mail address ismdavison@ iroquoiscsd.org or phone at 716-652-3000 and I will try to respond as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and your interest.
