CARS (Cobalt Advantage Reload System) User Manual Addendum

/ Warning: if the CARS selector is “on” and the bolt is locked rearward, whenthe shooter inserts a loaded or partially loaded magazine—this rifle will LOAD ITSELF—and it will be ready to FIRE! Before use with live ammunition completely read this manual and familiarize yourself with the rifles operation. Use caution and always follow accepted firearm safety protocols!

Welcome to the CARS (Cobalt Advantage Reload System)themost significant improvement to the design and capability of the AR-15 in the last 40 years. A CARS equipped rifle maximizes speed of handling and shooter performance while minimizing any limitationsor deficienciesin a shooter’s training and weapon handling skills. The CARS takes care of the mundane operation of the rifle- allowing the shooter to focus on dynamic movement, visual acquisition, and target engagement. Even the most skilled shooter, now only concerned with the trigger and the target, will achieve a new level of performance.

Cobalt Kinetics urges the user of CARS to employ this new system with a degree of caution; it's a new manual of arms and process of operation. While learning your new rifle, please be aware that this rifle LOADS ITSELF- whenever ammunition is available. If the bolt is not locked rearward, your CARS rifle is loaded and ready to fire. A loaded magazine should only be inserted into the CARS rifle if and only if the user is in an environment where discharge of the rifle is both safe and permitted. New users of the CARS system must proceed slowly at first, and become totally familiar with its safe and proper operation. Former training and familiarity with other small arms platforms does not guarantee safety and proficiency with CARS. Assumed familiarity or complacency with any weapon will lead to unintended negative consequences.

Read and understand these instructions. Follow basic safety procedures. Think.

Initial operation of a CARS equipped rifle:

  1. Establish that you are in an area that is safe for gunfire. Verify that your intended direction of fire is safe; and free from people or population.
  2. One should always verify that his rifle is in safe working order before firing. The barrel is free from obstruction and the mechanism is clean and properly lubricated prior to the initiation of live-fire. And that the rifle is truly empty of ammunition.Execute visual and tactile inspection of the bore, chamber and magazine well.
  3. With the rifle pointed in a safe direction, open the action fully by pulling rearward on the charge handle. The bolt will lock to the rear.Move the safety selector to the “SAFE” position. If the bolt does not lock open, hit the reset switch and try again. The user should manually return the charge handle to its forward and locked position at this point.
  4. With the rifle pointed in a safe direction, deliberately insert a loaded magazine. Use of excessive force or over insertion can result in a jam; which is always a possibility in any AR patterned rifle. Use common sense here; it is not a demonstration of speed or strength. Excessively slow presentation of the magazine can also result in a jam. Just put the magazine in the rifle.
  5. The BCG will be release and travel to battery and load a cartridge on its own.
  6. Proceed with normal firing.
  7. If the drop selector is in the rearward position, the rifle will operate conventionally when the magazine runs empty. The bolt will lock open, and magazine will be available to the user to be retrieved from the rifle as usual.
  8. If the selector is forward, the rifle will drop the magazine once the last round is fired from the rifle. While the selector is forward, the rifle will not retain an empty magazine. While the selector is forward, the reset switch may be used as a magazine release. This allows the user to affect a hot reload while keeping the rifle at high ready.
  9. If any operation is performed “out of sequence” the system needs to be reset. Such as manually sending the bolt home on an empty chamber, or clearing a jam. After any manual or selectiveinteraction with the bolt catch, you will be required to activate the reset switch. This will restart the system; so the bolt may be locked open to prepare for normal loading.
  10. In the event of a jam or other need to clear the action, follow this procedure:
  11. Forward hand: shift grip to the magazine well.Trip the reset switch with the thumb- this will drop the magazine- it may be necessary to use the trigger hand to strip the magazine out in the case of a partial or double-feed.
  12. With the thumb of the forward hand depress and hold the bolt catch paddle (this will keep BCG from locking) with the trigger hand pumps the charge handle as required.
  13. Forward hand: release the bolt catch then trip the reset switch with the thumb.
  14. Trigger hand: Charge the weapon to lock open, return the charge handle forward, and reinsert a magazine.

Important notes and procedures with a CARS equipped rifle:

  1. The bolt group will ALWAYS lock rearward once the ammunition supply is exhausted.
  2. The bolt group WILL release from a locked open condition whenever presented with a loaded magazine - regardless of the position of the drop selector toggle.
  3. The magazine "auto-drop" feature can be deactivated with the drop selector. However, the "auto-load" feature wherein the rifle releases the bolt from a locked open condition once ammunition is presented by the magazine, cannot be disabled.
  4. A CARS rifle will only retain an empty magazine if the drop selector is in its rearward position.
  5. The CARS rifle retains standard controls features like the magazine release button and bolt catch. These control surfaces will behave as usual; should the operator choose to employ conventional handling techniques. The reset switch functions as a left side magazine release.
  6. The CARS rifle will operate correctly with most dummy rounds or snap caps. Feel free to execute inert training in order to become familiar and proficient with the system’s operation.
  7. CARS is not user serviceable. It is not serviceable by the even most experienced gunsmith with general training or experience. Should any component fail, your CARS rifle should be returned to Cobalt Kinetics for repair. This includes any disassembly and preparation for refinishing or painting of your rifle. Any evidence of tampering or attempted repair by any other party will result in your rifle and its warranty becoming void by Cobalt Kinetics. The CARS system has been tested and vetted beyond all MIL STD criteria for longevity, wear, and service interval. It can be expected to last as long as any other rifle component. Cleaning can be effected by inverting the lower receiver and spraying an aerosol solvent into the mechanism. Compressed air is also recommended. Allow to dry and introduce thin or penetrating oil. Dry graphite or Teflon are also acceptable. Do not use inject grease into the mechanism.

In the event of any malfunction or unexpected operation or failure, please contact the following individuals directly. Please don’t call the main office line for technical assistance. Correspondence should include the serial number of the rifle, name of the shop where the gun was purchased, and detailed description and the conditions surrounding your concern. If possible, include photos and video. Also include a phone number where you may be reached.
