1931-2008
Emerson Walter Brown, Jr., age 77, of Bristol, TN, left Wellmont Hospice House and went home to heaven on Friday, June 20, 2008 following a long courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma and Congestive heart failure. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Emerson was born January 13, 1931 in Betsy Lane, Kentucky and was the son of the late Walter and Essie Smith Brown of Big Rock, VA. As a young man, he graduated from Grundy High School and attended Milligan College and Emory and Henry, earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from ETSU and his Masters Degree from University of Virginia. He attended several summer institutes furthering his education at Yale University and Kansas State in Manhatten, Kansas.
He taught at Garden High School in Oakwood, VA for 54 years and Southwest Virginia Community College and was a member of VEA and NEA. Emerson was a devoted Christian, baptized in 1954 by Clarence Greenleaf at Grundy Church of Christ. He served as a Deacon and teacher at Grundy, then moving to South Holston Lake in 1980, he served as an Elder and teacher at Macedonia Church of Christ and was currently a member at Painter Creek Church of Christ. In 1981, he
moved from Buchanan County, Virginia to Bristol where he has since resided.
He loved being outdoors and fishing was his passion. He loved hunting, camping and being with his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by two sisters, Shelby Jean Brown and Dolores Ann Borders, and his three brothers, Leonard Brown, Bobby Brown and Dee Brown.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Mickie Taylor Brown, and his daughter, Diana and son-in-law, Mark Singleton of Lebanon, VA. Also surviving are several nephews, nieces and cousins.
