Principal’s Notes

We are starting the second semester and students will have a new opportunity to improve their grades. As parents, encourage your son/daughter to complete homework and when absent, be sure they do the makeup work on time. If they need help have them see their teacher. I see teachers all the time tutoring students during lunch and before and after school.

Attendance

Attendance is a very important part of preparing students for college and careers. Our attendance policy allows students ten (10) parental excused absences within the entire school year. After ten (10) excused absences, a doctor’s statement is required for further absences due to personal illness. If a doctor’s note is not received, the absence will be unexcused and they get zeros on all work due the day of absence.

Failed Courses

If your son/daughter failed a course they will need to contact their guidance counselor to construct a plan to make up the credit. This plan could be a part of their schedule for next year or it may involve after school or summer courses. They could also begin taking our recovery courses here at the high school during a study hall on the Odyssey Ware online software.

Post Secondary Options Meeting

If your son/daughter is considering attending one of our area colleges next year through the post secondary options program, the student and at least one parent must attend the post secondary options meeting. This meeting will be at the Miami East High School on Wednesday February 11, 2013 at 6:30 pm.

Senior Community Service Hours

All seniors attending MiamiEastHigh School are required to do 10 community service hours. This information was given to them in May. Please check with your son/daughter to see if they have completed these hours. If they have completed these hours, encourage them to turn in the paperwork to Mr. Williams. If they have not completed these hours, encourage them to begin work on them. This does not include the students attending one of the vocational schools. These schools have their own requirements.

GraduationPractice

Graduation will be on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 7:30p.m. at the Hobart Arena in Troy. Students will be required to attend graduation practice on the morning of graduation. Attendance at this practice is mandatory in order to march at graduation that evening.

Academic Boosters

The Miami East Academic Boosters are in need of support both financially and with active members. The boosters provide students with honor roll recognition activities and scholarships. If you are interested in donating or would like to become a member of the boosters, please call the high school.

Scholarship Information and College Visitations

This is the time for seniors to be applying to colleges and begin to fill out scholarship applications. Your senior should make an appointment with Mr. Rutledge to check graduation credits and gather college information. Seniors should be listening to announcements and checking the “Scholarship File” on a regular basis for information and deadlines.

Viking Fest

A “Community Fund-Raiser” benefiting the Miami East Education Foundation will be held at the Miami East K-8 building on Saturday, February 16thfrom 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
