PRESS RELEASE

In the National Judicial Policy-2009, it was emphasized for clearance of the backlog of the civil and criminal cases in Superior Courts and district judiciary by implementing the long term and short term measures set out in it. The Superior Courts have been issue direction to furnish fortnightly and monthly reports in respect of disposal, institution and pending cases in the Superior Courts and district district Courts. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan is personally taking keen interest and is keeping watch on submission of the reports to check as to whether the disposal of the cases is in accordance with the target specified in the National Judicial Policy. The following is the details of the cases pending, instituted, disposed of and balance during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010.

There was 18,359 of criminal and civil cases in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on 31st December, 2009, which was further increased by institution of 696 new cases, during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. During this period, 743 cases were disposed of, leaving balance of 18,312 cases on15thJanuary, 2010.

There was 1,665 cases in the Federal Shariat Court on 31st December, 2009, which was further increased by institution of 23 new cases during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. During this period, 8 cases were disposed of, leaving balance of 1,680 cases on15th January, 2010.

The backlog of the cases in the Lahore High Courtupto 31st December, 2009 was 108,517and 3,816 fresh cases were instituted in the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The Court decided 2,223 cases, leaving balance of 110,110 cases. Indistrict judiciary there was a backlog of 1,121,581 cases, which was further increased by institution of 77,153 new cases in the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-.01-2010. The district Courts disposed of 106,065 cases, leaving balance of pending cases of 1,092,669.

The pendency of cases in the High Court of Sindh was 28,868 on 31st December, 2009, whereas 912 new cases were instituted in the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The Court disposed of 366 cases, leaving balance of 29,414 cases. The district judiciary in the Province of Sindh has a backlog of 116,763 cases, which was further increased by institution of 8,100 new cases during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The district Courts disposed of 8,869 cases, leaving balance of pending cases of 115,994.

The backlog of the criminal and civil cases in the Peshawar High Court was 14,211 on 31.12.2009which was further increased by institution of 751 new cases during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The Court disposed of 440 cases, leaving balance of 14,522 cases. The district judiciary in province of the N.W.F.P has a backlog of 127,459 cases, which was further increased by institution of 12,395 new cases during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The district Courts disposed of 11,752 cases, leaving the balance of pending cases of 128,102.

The backlog of the criminal and civil cases in the High Court of Balochistan was 4,726 on 31.12.2009and 237 fresh cases were instituted during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The Court disposed of 70 cases, leaving balance of 4,893 cases. The district judiciary in the province has a backlog of 5,973 cases, which was further increased by institution of 1,192 new cases during the period from 01-01-2010 to 15-01-2010. The district Courts disposed of 843 cases, leaving balance of pending cases of 6,322.
