JOB DESCRIPTION
To provide leadership to a cohort of students and a team of tutors to raise achievement. In addition to the duties set out in the “School Teacher Pay and Conditions of Service” document and the Job Description for classroom teachers, this post carries with it the following responsibilities in the first instance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The post-holder will work with the Head of School to:
Team Leadership/Management
- ensure a coordinated approach to the management of attendance and punctuality to school and behaviour in line with whole school policies.
- keep informed of the curriculum offer for the cohort and support students in helping them to make decisions about option choices at the end of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
- encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities.
- monitor and evaluate the tutor time activities by observing the use of tutor time.
- work effectively with other Year Leaders and the Senior Leader responsible for raising achievement within the school.
- actively promote good behaviour in the school.
Learning and Achievement
- oversee all work in tutor time and ensure that learning experiences offered are appropriate and relevant to learning needs to ensure good progression for all students.
- keep informed of developments relevant to the academic achievement and well being of students.
- ensure that students’ progress is regularly monitored, and underachievers promptly identified and appropriate interventions put in place.
- develop effective liaison with the Inclusion Centre, LSU, SENCO, EAL team, MAT co-ordinator and Heads of Faculty to ensure and support appropriate intervention for identified students at risk of underachieving, and to ensure that the educational needs of all students are met.
- ensure that accurate records of attendance and punctuality are kept by all tutors in the team.
- monitor progress and behaviour in the year group and ensure that all behaviour concerns are dealt with in line with year team and school policy.
- devise and implement strategies for celebrating student achievement, e.g. regularly informing relevant parties in school and families.
- liaise with, and assist where appropriate, the senior leaderin charge of assessment, in the conduct of public and internal examinations.
Professional Support
- give advice and support to other tutors involved in the academic achievement and well being of students in the cohort.
- work with the senior leader responsible for staffing to ensure that newly qualified teachers, student teachers and new staff are given appropriate advice and support to become effective tutors.
- ensure that appropriate tasks are set for staff who cover tutor time.
- ensure the preparation and regular update of the Tutor Team Handbook.
Communications
- attend appropriate meetings and to provide opportunities for ideas/information to be fed back to and discussed with all team members.
- lead assemblies for the year group when required.
- convene tutor team meetings and ensure notes of discussion and action are kept.
- contribute to effective liaison with institutions outside the school, including primary schools and post-16 institutions when appropriate and related to transition.
- keep team members informed of developments.
- liaise with parents and carers, as and when appropriate.
Resources
- monitor and ensure the allocated capitation is spent appropriately and to keep the line manager / SLT informed of financial needs and spending.
- liaise with the senior leader responsible for timetable related to staff used as tutors.
Specific Responsibilities of the Year Leader
- to act as first contact for parents/carers and staff regarding the year group.
- support the year group at whole school events, e.g. Open Evenings and school
productions.
- as part of the relevant school team, implement the school’s behaviour policy.
- in liaison with careers staff, support the careers programme for the year group.
- in liaison with the PSHCE lead, support the PSHCE programme for the year group.
- in liaison with the senior leader responsible for enrichment, promote pupil engagementwithin the year group.
- assist the HoS in any other duties subject to negotiation.
General
- contribute to the delivery of additional operational requirements, such as detention duties.
- undertake additional tasks as required from time to time to support the growth and operational requirements of the faculty/team.

Qualifications:- Degree or equivalent plus teaching qualification
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
Experience:
- Evidence of excellent teaching and classroom management skills
- Successful experience of teaching in inner city comprehensive schools.
- Successful experience of teaching across the age and ability range
- Successful involvement in planning, implementing and evaluating initiatives to raise achievements
Management and leadership skills:
- The ability to motivate and lead people
- The ability to plan collectively.
- The ability to build good relationships with all students and adults
Professional knowledge and understanding:
- Evidence of excellent knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm for the subject and the capacity to engage students in the learning of the subject
- Understanding of Key Stage 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 transition issues
- Understanding of the 14 to 19 curriculum
- Knowledge and some experience of school self-evaluation
- The ability to use ICT effectively to support tasks and activities
