Instructions: Choose any combination of activities below to earn 5 stars. The learning opportunities below are grouped according to level of challenge. More stars are awarded to the more challenging activities. Choose either the ‘A’ option or ‘B’ option or both to get the star amount. If you choose both obviously you get double the star value.

One Star Opportunities

1a Describe the relationship between Mongols and their horses. Include the multiple uses of horses?

1b Describe the Mongol lifestyle and use a symbol or picture to represent one important aspect of their culture.

Two Star Opportunities

2a Analyze the map on p. 334, describe the extent of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan. Then explain what places were added to the Mongol Empire under Genghis’ successors. Using what is provided on the map, and your knowledge of geography, why do you suppose Genghis Khan and his successors failed to conquer Japan and South Asia?

2b Write a small 4 line rhyming poem about the relationship between trade and the Pax Mongolica.

Three Star Opportunities

3a Imagine Marco Polo kept a blog while he traveled. Create a small personal profile for Marco Polo’s blog, and a blog entry about one of his recent trips within China.Use information found in your textbook to describe what he saw/ experienced etc.

3b Imagine “Russia” and “China” were friends facebooking about the Mongol invasions and rule in their lands. Write up a dialogue between these two friends. How would Russia describe their experience of the Mongol invasion? What did and didn’t they like about Mongol rule? (Make sure trade is mentioned)

Use p. 309-310 for Mongol invasion and rule of Russia, and p. 335-336 for the invasion and rule of China.

4a Create a small book “Conquering for Dummies ” by Genghis Khan—which would include:

  1. Cover Page (would look similar to other “Dummies” books)
  1. Page 1 would include a paragraph entitled, “About the Author” that would describe Genghis Khan—his background and accolades. It would also have a paragraph labeled “Dedication” where you would chose who he would have dedicated the book to and why he did so.
