Toolbars you will need:

When working with text boxes and graphics in MS Word, it is useful to have the Formatting and Drawing Toolbars on your screen. This keeps you from having to search through the menus to find what you need. Follow the directions below to make sure the toolbars are accessible.

  1. From the Menu Bar, click on View, then Toolbars.
  2. Make sure there is a check beside Formatting and Drawing

When working with PHOTOS, it is also useful to have the Picture Toolbar available. Follow the directions above to add the Picture Toolbar to your workspace.

Adding a Text Box

  1. Locate the Drawing Toolbar at the bottom of your workspace.
  2. Click on the Text Box icon. (If you're not sure which one this is, let your mouse hover over each icon and a text box will pop up telling you what that icon is used for.)
  3. If a box comes up that says "Create Your Drawing Here," hit the escape key.
  4. Your mouse should now be a crosshare. Click and drag to form your box.

You can also add shapes by clicking on the rectangle or circle and following steps 3-4

Formatting a Shape, Picture, or Text Box

  1. Before you can format your text box or shape, you must select (click) the box, then move your cursor over the slanted lines surrounding the shape/box.
  2. Once your cursor shows a 4-arrow plus sign, Right Click.
  3. From the popup menu, select Format Shape/Picture/Text Box.

Once your formatting window pops up, there are several tabs to choose from:

Colors and Lines: allows you to change the color of the fill (background) of your text box as well as the color and thickness of the line around your box.

Layout:You MUST select the "In front of text" box in order to be able to move your object around on the page. This is also where you can Center your object.

Picture: The Picture tab is only available if you have selected a photo or clip art object. This allows you to change a color photo to black and white. You can also "fade" your picture by moving brightness up and contrast down.
