Chapter 4 / Unit 2 Modelling DNA / BLM 2-6
Goal • Solve the following acceleration problems. Be sure to show all your work.

1. A sprinter accelerates from the starting blocks to a velocity of 9.4 m/s[W] in 2.0 s. What is her acceleration?

2. As you approach a town while you are driving, you take your foot off the accelerator. The car slows down from 90 km/h[S] to 50 km/h[S] in 8.0 s. What is the acceleration of the car?

3. A toy car, placed at the top of a 6.0 m ramp, is released and rolls down the ramp. The car takes 12.0 s to roll down the ramp.

(a) What is the average velocity of the car?

(b) What is the final velocity of the car?

(c) What is the acceleration of the car?

4. A runner travelling at a velocity of 2.5 m/s[S] accelerates at a constant rate to pass another runner to win the race. She accelerates at a steady 1.5 m/s2 for 4.0 s and wins the race.

(a) How fast was she running at the end of the race?

(b) How far did she run while accelerating at the end of the race?

5. Jill is just starting to ride her bike when she is passed by Remo, also on a bike. Remo is travelling at a constant velocity of 5.0 m/s[N]. Jill accelerates at a rate of 2.5 m/s2[N] to
try to catch him.

(a) Calculate how far each cyclist travels in 1.0 s, 2.0 s, and 3.0 s.

1.0 s / 2.0 s / 3.0 s
Jill
Remo

(b) How long does it take Jill to catch up to Remo?
