General description
Designed for people who want a simple mobile phone that does the basics well. The Doro 508 is practical and can be used on any network to simply make and receive calls and texts only.
With cushioned large buttons wide enough to avoid misdialling. The unit has curved edges so is easier to grip and hold. Big black buttons with contrasting white numbers, two memory buttons and large LCD screen. Extras include: alarm clock, calendar, reminder alerts and handy calculator.
Orientation
Position the phone so that the flat display screen and number keypad are facing towards you with the number pad nearest to you.
Front
Starting at the top, above the display is a small rectangular slot positioned centrally, which provides sound from the loudspeaker.
Immediately below this hole is the display screen, and at the top of the screen is a silver Doro logo. Below this is the display, which measures approximately 3.5cm (1.4") wide by 3cm (1.1") high.
Below the display screen are seven rows of buttons. The first row contains two long rectangular black buttons with horizontal white lines across their centres. These two buttons are the left and right function buttons used to select options in accordance with the changeable prompts shown at the bottom of the display.
In between these two buttons is a large square rocker button with two curved white symbols - this is the Scroll button. This enables you to scroll up and down through lists or menu options. This large button also sits in between the two buttons on the row below.
The next row has two rectangular black buttons, situated either side of the large Scroll button detailed above. The left hand button has a horizontal phone symbol in green and this is the Call button. The right hand button has a red horizontal phone symbol with a red line underneath the symbol. This button has a number of functions and is the End call/ Power End call, Cancel and Reject call button.
The next row has four smaller rectangle buttons. From left to right the first two are labeled A and B. These are speed dial buttons. The third button is the Torch button, and the fourth button on the far right has an envelope symbol and is a message shortcut button.
The next four rows of buttons form the number keypad laid out in the standard format. The first row has 1, 2, 3, the second row 4, 5, 6 and the third row 7, 8, 9. The bottom row has star, 0 and hash. The number 5 button has a tactile markers towards the centre. The first three rows of the number buttons also have the letters of the alphabet distributed over them in the standard allocation as follows: 2 is A, B, C; 3 is D, E, F; 4 is G, H, I; 5 is J, K, L; 6 is M, N, O; 7 is P, Q, R, S; 8 is T, U, V and 9 is W, X, Y, Z. These letters are used to enter names against the numbers that you store in your phonebook and also to create SMS text messages.
The star button is also used to lock the keypad to prevent accidental presses of the keypad. The hash button is used to change from ring to vibrate mode by pressing and holding at the home screen.
Between the eight and nine buttons is a small hole which allows sound to reach the microphone when you are speaking.
Back
The battery cover forms the lower two thirds of the back of the phone. Removing this cover gives access to the rechargeable battery bay and the SIM card tray.
Immediately above the battery cover, in the centre, is the SOS emergency button, which is slightly depressed below the surface. This button has a silver circular symbol on it. Above this button are three small slots and this is the speaker for the ringer.
Left edge
There are no buttons or sockets on the left edge.
Right edge
Towards the top of this edge, adjacent to the screen, are two sockets. The upper most socket is a trapezoid shaped socket with the smaller edge towards the screen side of the phone. This is a mini USB socket used to charge the phone. Below this socket is a small round 3.5mm headset socket (headset not included).
Top edge
On the left is a small round hole of clear plastic which is the torch. This can be turned on and off by pressing and holding the torch button on the second row of the keypad.
Bottom edge
Towards the left and right edge are charging contacts, which are housed within square holes, and enable the phone to be charged when sitting in a Doro charging cradle (not included).
Display
When the phone is on, the display shows a number of small graphic symbols on the top row, from left to right they are:
· Signal strength - an aerial symbol with white bars alongside it that increase in height from left to right. These will vary in number with network coverage - more bars equals better coverage.
· Ring/vibrate - this symbol will change depending on the ring alert you have selected. A musical note symbol indicates ring only is selected, three diagonal lines to the left of the mobile phone symbol indicates vibrate and ring is selected, five diagonal lines indicates vibrate only is selected. A musical note with a red line through it indicates silent mode is selected.
· Bluetooth - a Bluetooth symbol will be show when it is active.
· New message - a closed envelope symbol indicates there is a new unread text message.
· Headset - a headphone symbol will appear if the headset is connected.
· Keypad lock - a symbol of a key indicates that the key lock has been activated.
· Alarm - a bell symbol indicates that the alarm has been set.
· Missed calls - shows as an angled telephone symbol with an exclamation mark and indicates you have missed or selected to reject a call. Missed calls will also show in the main display, just after they happen, as an angled telephone in a box and the number of missed calls.
· Roam - the letters RM inside a small square box - will appear if you travel abroad. Please telephone your network provider before you travel to ensure your network operator has enabled this service for your account.
· Battery charge level - in the top right hand corner of the screen. It consists of a small battery shaped graphic with a combination of three white or black segments that change with battery charge level. Three black segments indicate full charge and three white segments means the battery is almost flat.
You can choose which information you would like to be shown on the centre of the display. Select either the time (clock only) or all info (which includes the name of the network provider, the date and the time). This can be adjusted in the Idle display section from within Settings, User setup.
Along the bottom edge of the display when in the standby mode the following words will be seen:
· Menu - In the bottom left hand corner. This can be seen when the phone is in standby mode, and the left function button underneath will gain you access to the menu.
· Name - In the bottom right hand corner. This can be seen when the phone is in standby mode, and the right function button underneath it will gain you access to the contact list.
Getting started
Battery cover removal
First ensure the phone is switched off. Turn the phone over so that back is towards you and slide the cover down until you hear a click and then you can lift the cover off.
Inserting SIM card
The phone is supplied with the battery removed so you now have access to an empty battery bay. At the top edge, left hand corner are three brass contacts which line up with the three on the battery. To the right of these is a socket, this is for the SIM card.
Position the SIM card so that the cut corner is on the right and brass contacts facing down. The SIM card slot has a thin, white slot beneath it with a curved section removed. Place the thin, flat end of the SIM card on top of this white bridge and slide it into the slot.
Inserting the battery
The flat, rectangular battery has three brass-coloured contacts and two locating lugs along its top edge. The top side of the battery is white with the Doro logo and black writing on it and this side should face upwards. Insert/reinsert the battery by first inserting the top edge of the battery, with the three contacts on the top left hand side (these are a different texture to the rest of the battery's edges), into the battery bay and gently press it in place.
Battery removal
To remove the battery at any point, open the battery cover as detailed above. There is a thin recess on the bottom edge of the battery bay where you can lift the back edge of the battery out.
Replacing the battery cover
Place the battery cover approx 3mm below its proper location. Press down and slide upwards to click the battery cover solidly into place.
SIM - Enter PIN
When using some SIM cards you may be prompted to enter a PIN number when the phone is turned on. If a PIN request is displayed on screen when you switch the phone on, enter the 4-digit number that will come with your SIM card paperwork, below the barcode sticker. As you enter the number the display will show stars instead of numbers.
Warning - if you enter the PIN number wrong three times then the phone will lock completely and you will have to contact your network operator for an unlock code.
If there is no SIM card in the phone the display will show a small single square and an arrow pointing down and the switch on sequence will stop.
WARNING - if you press the green call button with no SIM card in the phone, it will dial the emergency services.
