School Librarian

Job Description

Reports to:Headmaster, Deputy Head and Director of Studies

Responsible for: carrying out the professional duties of a librarian as circumstances may require and in accordance with the school’s policies.

General description of the job

The successful applicant will have responsibility for promoting the Library and its resources both within the Library and across the whole school to inspire a love of literacy. The post holder will support the whole school through the management, development and promotion of the Library within the School, to ensure that an effective resource and information service is provided to all children and staff.

The post holder will have previous library experience, preferably with experience of working in schools or with children.

Key activities:

Organisation and management of the Library to ensure it has an integral role in supporting the curriculum.

Knowledge of children's literature and children's resources to support the curriculum (in liaison with the Head of English).

Meet with the Head of English on a regular basis to discuss Library matters.

Selection, acquisition, organisation, promotion and maintenance of books and non-book resources to cover the full age and ability range of the School community and to ensure an equality of opportunity for all children.

Manage the Library budget and make annual proposals as required by the Headmaster.

Ability to use Library management systems (Micro-Librarian) and other ICT software within the Library.

Arrangement of materials for effective retrieval including the systematic indexing, classification and cataloguing of all Library resources.

Organise the Book Fair which usually takes place in May.

Ensure a high standard of display and promotional material to maintain and improve the standard of appearance of the Library and in alignment with the reading texts set by the teachers.

Guidance and assistance to pupils on:

a. appropriate strategies for the selection of information resources to undertake assignments both from within the School and the wider community

b. the effective use of specific sources e.g. reference material

c. the choice of literature and material to meet curricular and leisure needs

d. the compilation of book lists and other promotional material

Supervise and train staff, parents, volunteers and pupil librarians working in the Library as required.

Keep the Headmaster and SMT informed about the needs and development of the Library.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to adapt to very different audiences.

Ability to assume responsibility for your own work, devise your own work schedule and set appropriate targets and achieve them.

Display the children’s work within the Library and elsewhere in the school as appropriate.

Create and maintain a safe working environment at all times, reporting any hazards in accordance with the School Health and Safety Policy.

Such other duties as may be reasonably expected to fulfil the functions of the post of a member of staff at Littlegarth School.

Salary

Salary will depend upon qualifications and experience and will be commensurate with the responsibility of the post.
