Laboratory Safety Rules & Student Contract

  1. Follow all instructions exactly as stated by the teacher
  2. When instructed to wear eye protection, safety goggles must be worn OVER the eyes at all times when in the lab area
  3. Confine or securely tie together hair that reaches to shoulders [Remember hair is extremely flammable]
  4. Do NOT eat, drink or chew gum in the laboratory; Dangerous chemicals can contaminate what you put into your mouth
  5. Never taste anything in the laboratory unless specifically instructed to do so by your teacher
  6. No chemicals are ever to be taken from the laboratory area
  7. Horseplay during labs will not be tolerated
  8. Report any injury or accident to the teacher immediately

A. Report all chemical spills and glass breakage

a. this includes spills on your clothing

  1. Never attempt to clean up chemical spills or glass breakage by yourself
  1. Know fire drill procedures

10.Know location and operating procedures of all safety equipment

  1. Overhead showers and Eye Wash

B. Fire blankets and fire extinguishers

  1. Allow adequate workspace by keeping aisles and tables as clear as possible.
  2. Be familiar with the experiment to be performed and the chemicals and equipment being used before you start the experiment
  3. Students are not permitted in storerooms or prep rooms unless specifically instructed to do so.
  4. Any experimenting other than that defined in the lab write up is prohibited.
  5. Use only materials and equipment authorized by the teacher
  6. Dispose of all chemicals and wastes as instructed by the teacher
  7. Never leave an experiment unattended
  8. Extinguish all burners and turn off the gas if you leave the work area
  9. Leave the laboratory as clean as you found it; lab stations must be washed down

  1. Footwear that completely covers the foot is highly recommended during labs
  2. Do not return any chemical to its original container unless specifically instructed to do so
  3. Never point the open end of a test tube being heated at yourself or others
  4. Always add acid to water [Especially true with concentrated acids]
  5. Avoid inhaling chemical fumes
  6. Breaking any of these rules may result in a request for you to leave the lab area in which case you will receive a failing grade for the lab exercise

By signing this contract you are agreeing to abide by the rules in the John Jay High School Laboratory Safety Rules and Student Contract attachment as well as any other specific instructions provided by the instructor or school administration. If I break these rules I may be asked to leave the lab area and I will receive a failing grade for the Lab.
