Eyeglass Microphone supplement

Instructions

Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of The Sound Professionals Eyeglass microphone option.

Once the microphone capsules are mounted inside a set of cotton Croakies, the Croakies® can be mounted to a pair of glasses by inserting each earpiece of the glasses into the opening at each end of the Croakies. The cable can then be tucked inside a shirt collar if desired.

Instructions for mounting the mics in the Croakies®

1-remove the windscreens from the mics and save for later use without the Croakies

2-at the bottom of the Croakies, you will see a small piece of material with the word "Suiters" on it. This needs to be removed and can be discarded. Carefully cut the threads holding this on the Croakies and pull it off. Try and keep the fraying of the Croakie material to a minimum. Snip off any loose threads from the bottom of the Croakies. Remove the black ring holding the Croakies together and discard it. You should now have two separate pieces of material. Inside the front end of each tube you should feel a rubber tube. This has to stay where it is.

3-you will find that the Croakies are actually a tube of cloth inside an outer tube of cloth. Start with one side of the Croakie and pull the outer tube back over the inner tube as far as possible without moving or exposing the rubber tube that is inside the Croakie. Lay one microphone element on the inner tube that has been exposed and pull the outer tube back over the mic (re-assembling the croakie), pushing the mic as far up as possible in the croakie tube. Try to get the microphone within an inch of the rubber tube. Continue pulling the outer tube back over the inner tube until both tubes are the same length.

4-repeat step 3 for the other Croakie side.

5-at this point both mics should be in the Croakies, both Croakies the same length with a mic cable coming out of each end. Let the cables untwist by picking the mics up by the connector and letting them hang freely. The cables will untwist naturally.

6-bind the two ends of the Croakies together where the cables come out with a rubber band to hold the whole assembly together

7-to wear the croakies, push each side onto a pair of glasses so that the arms of the glasses go into the rubber tube at the front of each Croakie.

Preparing to make a recording

First, you should determine the best microphone placement for your recording situation. For Binaural recordings (using Omni mics), it is usually best to slide the Croakies® into a position such that the ends of the Croakies® (where the mic capsules are located) are on either side of your head, close to your ears. This will produce exceptionally true and accurate recordings when played back using headphones. It is very important that the left/right placement is maintained throughout the recording and playback process; otherwise, the recording will sound like the performers were seated behind you instead of in front of you.

For standard stereo recordings (using omnis or cardioids) that will be played back through loudspeakers, it is suggested that you slide the Croakies® (with the microphones in the ends) forward, closer to the front of your glasses. This will produce superb stereo recordings for playback through loudspeakers or headphones.

You may now begin recording, following the directions provided by your recorder’s manufacturer. After a few minutes of recording, stop the recorder and listen to the recording you have just made. Adjust the microphone placement and recording levels as needed. Repeat this procedure until you are satisfied with the results. You are now ready to make that once-in-a-lifetime recording!
