Management Accountant

JOB TITLE:Management Accountant

ACCOUNTABLE TO:Chief Executive

RESPONSIBLE FOR:Producing high quality financial management and information.

JOB PURPOSE:The main duties will include bringing the management accounting function in-house, reconciling the accounting records, preparing the monthly management accounts and monitoring the financial position of the charity’s services and fundraising activities.

Other duties will include reviewing and enhancing the charity’s internal controls, processing the payroll and playing a key role in budget setting and forecasting.

The management accountant will regularly report to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Trustees, work with the fundraiser and other staff and liaise with external agencies / funders. As a result excellent interpersonal skills will be required. In addition, as a new role the successful candidate will need strong initiative and appropriate experience.

  1. Qualifications and Experience

3.1 Accounting professional, part or fully qualified CIMA/ACCA/ACA or experienced AAT

3.2 Minimum of three years’ experience in a management accounting / similar financial role

3.3 Charity sector knowledge and experience beneficial

3.4 Knowledge and experience of using accounting software packages (currently use Paxton, but considering move to alternative package)

3.5 Team management experience

  1. Accountabilities

4.1 Overall accountability and control of all financial transactions and accountancy matters

4.2 Regular review of bank reconciliations and maintaining balance sheet control accounts

4.3 Conducting month end and year end close processes and posting monthly journals i.e. accruals, prepayments, accrued/deferred income etc.

4.4 Reconciling income streams and occupancy records to ensure that income is completely recorded and reflected in the correct accounting period.

4.5 Preparing monthly management accounts broken down by service / fundraising and reporting back to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Trustees on variances from budget

4.6 Continual improvement of the internal controls and financial reporting systems

4.7 Preparation of the annual budget and cash flow management

4.8 Processing the monthly payroll

4.9 Preparing a year end file for the statutory accounts and audit, liaising with external auditors

4.10 Ensuring compliance with Companies House, Charity Commission and HM Revenue & Customs obligations

4.11 Any other duties which are reasonable and assist in the ongoing financial operations of the charity

5.2Promote and maintain effective channels of reporting,record keeping and communication in order to promulgate and accomplish the organisation’s mission, values and objectives.

5.3Promote and adhere to the content and spirit of BFC Ltd’s equal opportunities policies in all aspects of work.

5.4Promote health and safety in all aspects of work and implement BFC Ltd’s policy and procedures in regard to this.

5.5Attend, facilitate and participate in meetings including supervision, appraisal and training.

5.6Produce written reports and returns as required.

5.7Manage personal workload in liaison with the Chief Executive.

5.8Undertake specific tasks and projects as directed by the Chief Executive and such other duties that may be required to meet the objectives of the post.

5.9Keep abreast of developments in the field in relation to good practice,legislation and regulations to inform the development of service delivery.

5.10Proactively participate in the strategic planning process,including evaluation, monitoring and review.

5.11Ensure adherence to the confidentiality policy in all aspects of work.
