1. Consul General of Spain speaks to Spanish Institute’s alumniMr. Ignacio Sánchez de Lerín García-Ovies, Consul General of Spain in Toronto, will talk to The Spanish Institute’s alumni, clients and friends on Tuesday, July 5th at 7:00 p.m. at The Legislature Building. Mr. Ignacio Sánchez de Lerín’s chosen topic will be “Spain today: geography and history”. (In English). A reception will follow in his honour.

8. Mr. Miguel García reads Spanish poetry at Nicaraguan eventMr. Miguel García will be a guest at a Nicaraguan cultural event on Saturday, July 25th at Richmond Kings Community Centre, 666 Silverstone Avenue at 7 p.m. He will read a selection of Spanish contemporary poetry.
9. Taxus Baccata by Julia OtxoaEl Spanish Institute fecilita a Julia Otxoa, una autora estudiada en nuestro Círculo de Lectura, por su nueva publicación. Julia Otxoa donó al Spanish Institute recientemente un ejemplar dedicado de Taxus Baccata.
“La Editorial Hiperion publica en España Taxus Baccata, obra de la poetisa vasca Julia Otxoa. El Portal de Poesía Contemporánea [Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes] ofrece una selección de este poemario que hasta ahora sólo se había publicado en Quaderni della Valle en Italia, en 2001. La edición que acaba de salir a la venta en España ha sido ilustrada por el artista guipuzcoano Ricardo Ugarte. La investigación estética y la dimensión poética son los rasgos que han unido a ambos autores en este universo contemplativo que es Taxus Baccata. Otxoa asegura que eligió el nombre botánico del Tejo, un árbol de crecimiento lento, como título de su último libro para reivindicar el concepto de lentitud. "En general vivimos en el desconocimiento del mundo que nos rodea, apenas nos fijamos en sus detalles, no nos detenemos a mirar, a reflexionar sobre nuestro entorno directo", asegura la poetisa. Mr. Miguel-García supports Fundación "Amigos del Olivar de Chamartín" in MadridEl Sr. Miguel García, en su defensa y promoción de bienes culturales españoles, se adhirió a la campaña de la Fundación "Amigos del Olivar de Chamartín", entre los cuales se encuentra el director del Spanish Institute, para la defensa del "Olivar de Chamartín", un enclave de alto valor histórico y ecológico, situado en el Madrid norte, entre las calles Menéndez Pidal, Alberto Alcocer, Padre Damián y Henri Dunant.
