Night Support Worker

Roles and Responsibilities

Professional Practice

·  Provide a supportive and nurturing environment that supports a young person centred approach.

·  To be a positive role model to young people supporting them to develop meaningful relationships.

·  Contribute to the development of the young people to enable them to reach their full potential

·  Provide firm and consistent boundaries to create an environement that creates safety and reassurance for young people.

·  Work with young people to develop their true sense if identity and feel of self worth.

·  Be sensitive and aware of the needs of the young person, taking into account their race, culture, language and religion and provide support that takes account of these needs.

·  Communicate with young people in a manner that is appropriate to their individual needs. This includes non verbal communication and behaviour and respond, report and record as appropriate.

·  Work within a framework that respects young person’s rights and works in a non discriminatory and non oppressive way.

·  To work alone and within the wider team to ensure young people develop in a caring, consistent atmosphere and environment

·  Provide support to young people who are unable to sleep during the night.

·  Follow and support young people with their nightly settling routines and their waking routines.

·  Maintain regular checks of each young person as required in their support plan and record as required.

·  Support Young people maintain their health and ensure they are supported to maintain a healthy diet during supper and breakfast and provide support to prepare meals.

·  Complete daily log for each young person and any reports required, e.g. Incident form, MISPER, Physical Intervention etc.

·  Contribute to the completion of Young Person’s Support Plans, Behaviour Support Plans, Risk Assessments

Team Working

·  Participate in nightly handovers to obtain relevant information from previous shift and to pass on information to oncoming shift.

·  Use relevant in house communication systems to pass on and provide information to other members of the team and management.

·  Maintain effective relations with other members of the team to ensure the post holder does not become isolated.

·  Take responsibility for maintaining their own learning and development and engage in training as required.

·  Ensure they attain the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Workforce in a reasonable timeframe.

·  Complete the appropriate FFG modules within the required timescale.

·  Complete administrative filing.

·  Complete risk assessments as required.

·  Contribute to Local Procedures

·  Support day staff to plan activities and research information on costs etc.

·  Maintain and update notice boards.

·  Maintain the nightly log of events.

·  Support the Senior Night Support Worker in the Induction of new staff.

·  Attend and contribute to staff meetings as required.

·  Attend positively in supervision as required.

·  Undertake domestic and administrative duties and any other relevant duties in connection with the day to day running of the home that may be requested by the Registered Manager or Senior Night Support Worker.

Medication

·  Administer medication to young people where required.

·  Follow appropriate procedures in the administration of medication.

·  Maintain relevant knowledge of medication administration and recording.

·  Complete the medication audit each night when on duty, communicating to day staff and management any discrepancies found.

Safeguarding

·  Identify where a young person shows signs of distress or abuse and ensure that young people are monitored and protected

·  Attend and maintain training in safeguarding.

·  Have a good knowledge & understanding of Priory policies & local procedures in; safeguarding, Bullying, Missing from care

Health and Safety

·  Be responsible for the safety, welfare and security of young people at night time.

·  Monitor the fire alarm system and follow appropriate procedures in the event on an emergency.

·  Conduct night time fire evacuations, reporting any support issues to home manager.

·  In the event of an emergency or crisis beyond the scope of the postholder, contact on call or senior staff for advice or assistance.

·  Complete any H&S checks at request of home manager (e.g. fire extinguisher, water, radiator, temperature & lighting checks)

Environment

·  Conduct a nightly health and safety check of the environment.

§  Fridge temperature checks last thing at night and first thing in the morning

§  Monitor food temperature logs and report gaps to manager.

§  Monitor fridge contents to ensure contents are covered, labelled and in date. Dispose where required and report to manager.

§  Empty and clean all waste bins and ensure bins are available for refuse collection.

§  Maintain a cleaning schedule to ensure tasks are completed and monitored.

§  Ensure communal areas are clean and tidy.

§  Report health and safety and maintenance issues to management.

§  Prepare breakfast table.

§  Deep clean kitchen cupboards

§  Clean oven and microwave as per schedule

·  Complete cleaning tasks as required.

§  Every night wash hard kitchen and hard floors.

§  Wash down kitchen surfaces

§  Load/unload dishwasher and clean internally.

§  Empty waste bins

·  Complete laundry tasks.

§  Ensure all Young Persons clothes are clean and tidy.

§  Launder young people’s clothes

§  Iron clothing where appropriate

§  Prepare school uniform for each morning.

§  Report worn and damaged clothing to management.
