CROSSING GUARD
FUNCTION: Directs traffic at assigned crossing(s) to protect school
children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic.
HOURS: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Monday through Friday, 1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

SALARY: $12.00 per hour (for a total of 85 hours per month)
(paid on a monthly basis)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Report directly to assigned crossing station, be on time and remain
there until the conclusion of the assignment.
Ensure that children use the proper crossing locations and that no
children are in the street while traffic is moving.
Be alert for present or potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding
The assigned crossing(s). Submit to the Chief of Police a written report
of any such hazards with a recommendation for remedial steps to
be taken.

SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS
POSITION OVERVIEW
School Crossing Guards are responsible for directing traffic at assigned crossings to protect school children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
It is the duty and responsibility of the School Crossing Guards to:
- Report directly to assigned crossing stations, be on time and remain there until the conclusion of the assignment.
- Ensure that children use the proper crossing locations and that no children are in the street while traffic is moving.
- Be alert for present or potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding the assigned crossings. Submit to the Chief of Police a written report of any such hazards with a recommendation for remedial steps to be taken.
UNIFORMS:
- Uniforms will consist of a highly visible florescent orange vest that shall be worn at all times while on duty.
- The hand held traffic stop sign shall also be used exclusively to stop motor vehicle traffic.
- Rain coats may be worn, weather permitting.
PROHIBITED:
- Do not direct traffic to relieve congestion or to enhance traffic flow. Pay strict attention to the children who are coming to your crossing.
- Do not become involved in any verbal confrontation with an upset motorist. Advise motorist to report any complaint to the Mansfield Police Department.
- Do not attempt to enforce traffic laws. If any violations are observed, write down description of motor vehicle and registration, if possible, and submit to the police department immediately.
EXCUSED ABSENCES:
- A one and one-half hour notice shall be given to the police department if a crossing guard is sick.
- It is imperative that crossing guards be dependable and keeps to a minimum the amount of time taken for excused absences. Any excessive excused absences will be investigated to determine if the efficiency of the department is being undermined.
