TAPS

Day is done,

Gone the sun,

From the lake, From the hills, From the sky,

All is well, Safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light

Dims the sight,

And a star gems the sky, Gleaming bright,

From afar, Drawing nigh, Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,

For our days,

'Neath the sun, 'Neath the stars, 'Neath the sky,

As we go, This we know, God is nigh.

Cub Scout Vespers

Tune: "Oh Christmas Tree"

Sing with reverence.

As the night comes to this land,
On my promise I will stand,
I will help the pack to go,
As our pack helps me to grow.
Yes, I'll always give goodwill,
I'll follow my Akela still.
And before I stop to rest,
I will do my very best.

Family Vespers Song
Tune: "Oh Christmas Tree"

Now quietly we join as one,

We're thankful for our family fun.

As now we all go on our way

We're thankful for this happy day.

So may we always love and share,

And live in peace beyond compare.

As in our families we may find,

A friendship true with humankind.

Singing Around

Tune: "Are You Sleeping"

Are you singing? Are you singing?

Join with me. Join with me.

With music we make magic!

With music we make magic!

Sing with me. Sing with me.

Divide the audience into four groups with a leader for each one. The Cubmaster conducts the first group to join in singing on the line "With music we make magic!" He or she then conducts the other groups to join in until all groups are singing their own verse. The Cubmaster conducts the first group to stop and so on. Then all groups join in together for the finale.

You're a Grand Old Flag

You're a grand old flag,

You're a high-flying flag

And forever in peace may you wave.

You're the emblem of the land I love,

The home of the free and the brave.

Ev'ry heart beats true

For the red, white, and blue,

Where there's never a boast or brag.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot?
Keep your eye on that grand old flag.

Deep In The Heart Of Texas

The stars at night are big and bright,

Deep in the heart of Texas;

The prairie sky is wide and high,

Deep in the heart of Texas.

The sage in bloom is like perfume,

Deep in the heart of Texas;

Reminds me of the one I love,

Deep in the heart of Texas.

The coyotes wail along the trail,

Deep in the heart of Texas;

The rabbits rush around the brush,

Deep in the heart of Texas.

The cowboys cry, "Ki-Yip-Pee-Yi",

Deep in the heart of Texas;

The doggies bawl, and bawl and bawl,

Deep in the heart of Texas.

Texas, Our Texas

(Texas State Song)

by William J. Marsh and Gladys Yoakum Wright

Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty State!

Texas, our Texas! So wonderful so great!

Boldest and grandest, Withstanding ev'ry test;

O Empire wide and glorious, You stand supremely blest.

[Refrain:]

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,

That you may grow in power and worth,

Throughout the ages long.

Texas, O Texas! Your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far.
Emblem of freedom! It sets our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

[Refrain]

Texas, dear Texas! From tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes! We come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

[Refrain]

The Legislature adopted "Texas, Our Texas" as the state song in 1929 (Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 6, 41st Legislature, First Called Session). According to the "Handbook of Texas Online" one revision has been made to the state song since its adoption. In 1959, following Alaska statehood, the word "Largest" in the third line was changed by William J. Marsh to "Boldest."

Cub Scouts are Always Happy

Tune: "Yankee Doodle"

Here's to the birds that fly above

And never lose a feather,

I'll stay with the friends I love

In any kind of weather.

Chorus:

Cubs are always on the job,

Cubs are always happy,

Never lagging, never shirk,

We always make it snappy.

Join our busy, happy Den,

Always up and coming;

We're the ones that make things spin,

And then we keep them humming.

Chorus

They Come To Our Rescue, Thank You!

Tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"

The firefighters, they put out the fires,

The doctors they make us feel swell,

Our teachers they give us all knowledge,

Scout leaders teach us to do well!

Chorus:

Rescue, rescue,

They come to our rescue, thank you, thank you!

Rescue, rescue,

They come to our rescue, thank you!

New skills that you learn in Cub Scouting

Will help you to grow and be strong.

To help other people who need it,

To the rescue, you just can't go wrong!

The Star Spangled Banner

Oh! say can you see, By the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars,Through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen Thro' the mist of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host In dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, O'er the tower steep,

As it fitfully blows, Half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band Who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, When freemen shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,

Blest with vict'ry and peace, May the Heav'n-rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, For our cause it is just,

And this be our motto-- "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

God Bless America

God bless America, Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her,

Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans white with foam.

God bless America, My home, sweet, home,

God bless America, My home, sweet, home.

Irving Berlin, a well-known American songwriter, was an immigrant from Russia who came to the United States when he was 5 years old. In the fall of 1938, as war was threatening Europe, Berlin decided to write a patriotic song, hoping for world peace. He had written his "God Bless America" 20 years earlier and made some alterations to reflect the state of the world in 1938. The revised "God Bless America" was introduced on Armistice Day, 1938. Berlin established the God Bless America fund, dedicating the royalties to the Boys Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. America is made up of many immigrants, who are proud to be part of American culture.

Astronaut's Plea

Tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"

I went for a ride in a spaceship,

The moon and the planets to see.

I went for a ride in a spaceship,

Now listen what happened to me.

Chorus:

Bring back, bring back,

Oh, bring back my spaceship to me, to me.

Bring back, bring back,

Oh, bring back my spaceship to me.

I went for a ride in my spaceship,

The capsule was crowded, and I

Developed a cramp in my muscles,

So I decided to walk in the sky.

Chorus

I went for a walk in my spacesuit,

The ship was controlled from the ground,

And someone in charge down at NASA

Forgot I was walking around.

Our Feathered Friends

Tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"

Out in my backyard are sparrows,

Bluebird and mockingbirds, too.

They sing to me every morning,

I watch all the things that they do.

Build nests, fly high,

I watch you in awe every day, each day.

Build nests, fly high,

If I had your wings I'd fly too!

Cowboy Hats

Tune: Jingle Bells

Driving down the trail,

Chuck wagon in the scrub,

Cattle hands, they work all day

To earn their share of grub.

Gather 'round the fire

When the day is done,

Singing songs of adventure is sure a lot of fun.

Chorus;

Cowboy hats, cowboy hats, grab 'em off the nail.

Ride your horse and drive the herd,

Along the Chisholm Trail.

This Land Is Your Land

words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:

This land is your land, this land is my land

From California, to the New York Island

From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream

waters

This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway

I saw above me that endless skyway

I saw below me that golden valley

This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps

To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts

And all around me a voice was sounding

This land was made for you and me

Chorus

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling ,

And the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds

rolling

As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting :

This land was made for you and me

Chorus

(There are many slight variations in the lyrics from different sources)

Star Spangled Banner Opening

In 1814, The United States of America was 38 years old. George Washington had been dead for 15 years. Off in the backwoods of Kentucky, a 5-year-old boy named Abe Lincoln played with his brothers and sisters. For two years, America had been fighting a war against the British, started over English interference with American shipping. The young nation was not well prepared for war, and many battles were lost, especially on land. The British Navy had landed a professional army in Chesapeake Bay and captured Washington, D.C, and burned the Capitol building and the President's house. Their next target was Baltimore, Maryland, and all that stood in defense of the city was Fort McHenry. At dawn on September 13th, a bombardment began that lasted for 25 hours, with over 1500 rockets and bombs crossing the sky. A young American lawyer watched from a ship in the harbor. As twilight fell, he saw his country's flag over the ramparts of the fort. Through the long night, he was unable to tell in the dark and noisy confusion who was firing, and how his country fared. The flash of rockets and bombs gave him glimpses of the flag over Fort McHenry, but when dawn came, there was no wind to lift the flag hanging there. Had America won the battle, or was the British flag now hanging limply from the pole? Then the breeze slowly unfolded the stars and stripes! He was so moved he pulled a letter from his pocket, and on the back, he wrote these words we know so well today:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twillight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave,

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Yes, Mr. Key. It still waves today.

Please stand for the presentation of the colors.

Cubstruction

Tune: "Alouette"

Chorus:

Cub-struction, we build with cubstruction.

Cub-struction, it's how we build our world.

First you take a block of wood

Then you cut it down to size -

Block of wood - cut to size

OOOooohhh… Chorus

Next you take the right size nail,

Then you hammer carefully -

Right size nail - carefully
