Description: Aerial Splicer/Tester

Job Purpose:
Serves customers by splicing, troubleshooting, conducting and recording test data results, and verifying fiber optics and copper cables; documenting installation.
Duties:

·  Plans installation by analyzing work orders and wiring diagrams; studying system requirements; gathering equipment and supplies.

·  Maintains test equipment by evaluating, specifying, and completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for, or making, repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; analyzing new techniques.

·  Completes fiber optic installation by splicing fiber optics; preparing cable ends; attaching cables and making connections using splice trays, adhesives, anaerobic methods, chemical bonding, fusion, hot melt and mechanical fiber optic splices; polishing cable.

·  Completes copper cable installation by using a variety of splicing methods including MS-2 modules and associated equipment, 710 modules and equipment, Scotch-locks, and various punch down systems. Includes preparation of cable ends, preparation of sheath, standardized telephone cable grounding techniques, ability to distinguish pairs and pair colors, knowledge of standard pair color code, ability to organize and neatly dress cables. Ability to read blueprints, plans, schematics, and the like. Ability to work in confined spaces for long periods of time. Ability to maintain clean and operational hand, electric, and hydraulic tools. Ability to use various test equipment as it relates to copper cable testing to include, a TDR, VOM, Megger, ground tester.

·  Maintains fiber optic system compliance by adhering to minimum proper bend ratios and installation codes.

·  Identifies measurements and system failures by maintaining fiber optic standards; establishing specific application test standards; conducting and witnessing tests; performing diagnostic procedures; analyzing and evaluating measurements and failures; documenting findings; performing forensic analysis of failures; identifying root causes.

·  Verifies and troubleshoots installation by testing with signal level meters, light meters, light sources, detectors, etc.; preparing and studying block diagrams; checking voltage, current, resistance and signal levels at block diagram and schematic test points; using software programs.

·  Prepares test reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing measurement data and trends; conveying findings to engineering design team.

·  Maintains safe work environment by following safety rules; taking safety precautions; following proper disposal methods.

·  Keeps personal equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; informing management of needed repairs.
