Shine at the Spinney - free Dyslexia workshops for Adults a 20 week project run by Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Dyslexia Association offering specialist teaching for adults with Dyslexia or literacy difficulties.
These workshops aim to enable individuals with Dyslexia to;
- be included in a specialist teaching program to help them with learning
- access self-esteem support
- reach their potential as a dyslexic and make progress
What is Dyslexia?
"Dyslexia is a genetically inherited condition of the brain. It affects roughly 1 in 10 of the population. It may affect short term memory, aural or visual discrimination and memory, and the speed that the brain processes information. All of these are features are heavily involved in the learning process. Therefore, individuals affected by dyslexia are likely to have difficultieslearning to be literate and with time management and personal organisation."
What we can do in Shine at the Spinney?
- Establish a baseline placement to work from.
- Work on sequencing and memory activities, including the alphabet, the days of the week, months of the year and stories.
- Work on study skills such as comprehension skill, reading skills, planning strategies and essay writing skills.
- Work on handwriting and coordination difficulties.
- Work on self-esteem and confidence to help individuals to be creative writers and thinkers.
- Use the computers to teach ‘Touch, Type, Read & Spell’ and ‘Number and Word Shark’. The Multi-Sensory programs allows students to learn in a focused and one to one system which tests and sets work according the individual need.
