TUTORING AS A MEANS OF EVANGELISM
Freely you have been given, freely give (Matt. 10:8b).
This ministry seeks to serve three distinct groups of people:
- Those who wish to learn how to tutor in order to minister to those needing assistance and/or practice with phonetic reading.
- Those who need help when it comes to reading phonetically.
- Those parents who wish to begin homeschooling, but feel inadequately prepared to do so.
All three of these groups may have some overlap, but all can mutually benefit the other. The Literacy Team @ Heart Academy will meet on Fridays after regular classes at 3:00 pm. For the first month, there will be extensive “tutoring” on how to tutor. We will also focus on the ministerial potential of locating those who need help and connecting them with those willing and able to help them.
All three distinct groups are invited to participate. While there is no charge for the time, there are materials that will help prospective tutors become equipped to using tutoring as a means of evangelism.(These can be ordered through me at a substantial discount.)
Note to parents: Volunteer tutoring as a service project will not only help your student(s) in their service to the Kingdom of God, it will also be a benefit when it comes to applications for higher education and job opportunities.
MATERIALS
Alpha-Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers ($25)
Blumenfeld's Alpha-Phonics was created to provide parents, teachers, and tut+ors with a sensible, logical, easy-to-use system for teaching reading. It is an intensive phonics instruction program based on the author's many years of research and experience in the reading instruction field. It answers the need for a practical instruction program that anyone who wants to teach reading can learn to use with no special training.
The Workbook teaches our alphabetic system - with its 26 letters and 44 sounds - in the following sequence: First, the alphabet, then the short vowels and consonants, the consonant digraphs, followed by the consonant blends, and finally the long vowels in their variety of spellings and our other vowels.
Alpha-Phonics 11-Reader Set ($22)
The Alpha-Phonics Readers accompany the text of Sam Blumenfeld’s Alpha-Phonics, providing opportunities for students to read at a level that matches their progress through the text. These eleven readers move from simple sentences to paragraphs to stories, ending with poetry. By the time a student completes this simple program, the phonetic reflex is well-established. This program has also been successfully used with functionally illiterate adults.
