SECTION 7: FOR STUDENTS UNDER THE AGE OF 18

ACCESS TO THE INTERNET FOR STUDENTS UNDER THE AGE OF 18

PARENTAL CONSENT FORM

To students:

Under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, the University must obtain the consent “of a parent, teacher or other responsible adult” before granting internet access to students under the age of 18. All University students, regardless of age, have access to University online resources. These include the enrolment web site, MyUni, library resources, email, the student dialup facility and other University of Adelaide web sites. However, students under the age of 18 will not automatically be provided with access to the wider internet, particularly world wide web sites outside the University. The University has determined that, in order to meet itsobligations under the Act, parental consent must be obtained before students under the age of 18 are provided with access to the wider internet. The University points out that students’ access to the internet will by and large be unsupervised, though it may be monitored from time to time to ensure compliance with the University’s policies and rules.

Any student under the age of 18 years who wishes to obtain access to the internet must ensure the agreement below is signed by their parent or guardian and submit the form attached to their UPP Application Form.

The student will be able to access the wider internet by the start of Orientation Week (“O-Week”) or, if the form is returned after the start of O-Week, on the following business day.

To Parents/Guardians:

This agreement indicates that you consent to the provision of access to the internet to the student whose parent or guardian you are. Prior to signing this agreement, please read and make sure that you and the student understand the University’s Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy. The policy can be viewed at:

Users of the University’s facilities also have certain rights and obligations under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992. The Internet Industry Association has developed a web site to provide the general public with information about their rights and obligations. You may access the web site at:

I declare that I am the parent or guardian of the student named below. I acknowledge that the student and I have read and understood the University’s Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy and agree to abide by the policy, as varied from time to time. I acknowledge that I understand my rights and obligations, and those of the student, under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992.
