1. Bokto: Assign the students into groups of four. Inform them that they are going to play cards. Ask the students who feel comfortable playing cards to raise their hands. Pass out different directions to each group (See Appendix A. v). Inform the groups that they can read the directions silently and discuss how to play the game between themselves (very quietly), but they are not to talk to the other groups. Let them play one practice hand. After that hand is complete, ask them to raise their hand if they do not understand. DO NOT discuss the directions out loud with the class. After all groups have completed one hand, take away the directions and inform them that there is NO TALKING. If they object reassure them that they know the directions. After the second hand is played, have the winner move clockwise to the next table and the loser move counter-clockwise. Do this for at least three hands. Severely reprimand students who talk, giggle, cheat, and if they ask for clarification say, “Didn’t you say that you understood the rules?” Soon the students will realize that each table has different rules. After the game have the students process the following questions:
  • How did you feel when the rules weren’t posted or readily available?
  • For those of you who moved, what went though your mind?
  • Were any of you bullies in that you continued to play by the rules of your new/old table?
  • How many of you just gave up and started throwing anything down?
  • How many of you made up your own rules and brought them from table to table? Did you feel frustrated?
  • How do you think that middle school and high school students feel when they change classes? How many times have you heard a teacher say “They know what the rules are…I shouldn’t have to explain them!”
