Reading Skills: Main Ideas and Details; summarize

main idea- an important idea about a topic

details- a fact or example that tells more about a main idea

Use the Idea-Support Map to record the main idea

summarize-by retelling important details

infer- to figure out something that is not stated directly

Vocabulary Strategies: Suffix –ly

Suffix- an ending attached to a base word that changes the meaning of the word

-ly- means “in a certain way”

Ex.- Alex wanted to know what was in the box, so she curiously opened the lid.

Base word- curious- interested to learn something

Add –ly to curious and it becomes curiously which means “in an interested way”

Words with Long O:Words with o, oa, ow ex: Spelling words

Grammar: Using Proper Nouns

*Days of the Week-always begin with capital letters.

Ex.-Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

*Months of the Year and Holidays-always begin with capital letters.

Ex.- Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, January, March, August

*Book Titles-each important word in the title begins with a capital letter. The entire title is

underlined.

Science: Solids to Liquids/Liquids to Solids

1. By heating, you can change a solid to a liquid.

2. By cooling, you can change a liquid to a solid.

3. When you add heat to a solid, it can melt.

4. Chocolate will melt into a liquid when heat is added.

5. If you take enough heat from a liquid, it may freeze.

6. Melted wax will harden into the shape of its container when heat is removed.

7. Solid butter will melt to a liquid when heat is added.

8. Ice cream will become a liquid if heat is added.

9. Water changes from a liquid to a solid when enough heat is taken away from it.

10. Water freezes and becomes ice.

11. Juice can change from a liquid to a solid.

12. It will become an ice pop.

13. Ice melts when its temperature is high enough.

1. The federal government is made up of three parts, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President.

2. Congress makes laws to keep order and keep people safe.

3. The President is the elected leader of our country who makes sure that our country is a good place to live.

5. The Supreme Court is made up of nine judges who make sure the laws are fair.

6. Supreme Court Justices are chosen by the President.

7. The President and members of Congress are elected into office.

8. The written set of rules that our government must follow is called the Constitution.

9. The Constitution lists the rights, or freedoms, that citizens have.

10. Every ten years there is a census, or survey, to count the population.
