POYNTON CRICKET MATTERS
ISSUE SIXTY-four
june 2012
FIRSTS STILL UNBEATEN IN LEAGUE
First up in the latest sequence of matches were Warrington. Despite 3/31 from Damian Stringer, our visitors posted a solid total of 188/9. Poynton then slipped to 43/4, and from this position last season, defeat would surely have followed. But buoyed by the early season results, instead a comfortable four wicket win resulted. Brian Kingham played an immense innings, batting through 37 overs for 55 not out. Damian kept Brian company for a while with 39, and Rick Clark’s 30 not out finished the job.
Back-to-back wins followed as Stockport were defeated after another successful run chase. Damian finished 66 not out and Jake Turner made 49 as we reached 199/4.
After a washout at home to Alvanley, we then could not quite finish off Tattenhall, despite Jake achieving the best all round show of the season with 64 and 5/52. Damian continued his good form with 56* as we reached 192/8 batting first, and Tattenhall hung on at 148/9.
Once again the only defeats to report are in the cup competitions. Alderley Edge reached a formidable looking 186/2 in 20 overs, but at 124/1 in reply, an upset looked on the cards. Unfortunately Alderley’s Premier League class told and we closed short at 162/4 (Jake 62 from 43 deliveries, Tom Berzins 35).
Our T20 involvement for the season ended as we lost in the Plate – the first round losers competiton – to Cheadle. Despite 4/32 from Rick Carpenter, and Matt Heathcote conceding only nine in four overs, Cheadle’s 140/7 proved too much. A 36 run defeat followed with Chris Oake’s 20 the top Poynton score.
SECONDS ALSO IN PROMOTION HUNT
An excellent run chase at Bollington saw the home side’s score of 184/9 (Ric Carpenter 3/25, Chris Oake 3/49) overhauled in only 38 overs. Mark Fletcher made 54 and Matthew Warburton 32, and matters were concluded with Simon Dunn’s 51 not out.
After the two wins reported in the last newsletter, the seconds made it four in a row against Cheadle Hulme, who could only score 147/8 (Jimmy Williams 4/36). Jake Haresnape’s 54 and another innings from Matthew (32*) completed a five wicket win, again with plenty of overs in hand.
With the seconds in such good form, few would have predicted what would happen at Oxton, in a match brought forward from later in the season and played on Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday. Oxton made 178/9 (Adam Williams 4/63), a total we had chased successfully in several recent matches. But what followed was a collapse to 73 all out, Simon’s 29 the top score.
It was back to winning ways at Alvanley, where Adam turned in a great spell of 6/41 to keep the home side down to 157/9. A captain’s knock of 80* from Mark and 48 from Chris brought up a comfortable five wicket win.
A washout at home to Tattenhall completes the story of the last month.
THIRDS SCORE FIRST WINS
Top of the table Urmston visited Poynton and posted an imposing 183/9 dec after 42 overs, Andy Hadfield being the pick of the Poynton bowlers with 5/30. In reply Jim Wilde’s 44 and Bryan Thompson’s first Poynton ton contributed to an opening stand of 161. After Bryan was dismissed for 109 we suffered a few wobbles but finally crossed the winning line on 184/6.
The following week we suffered a washout as the fixture at Widnes was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Our next fixture was at home to bottom of the table Tattenhall who won the toss and inserted us on a damp track which had been under water 24 hours previously. Despite a solid start, wickets tumbled at regular intervals and we collapsed from 97/4 to 116 all out as Tattenhall’s young leg spinner wreaked havoc. In reply, despite two early wickets, Tattenhall romped to 122/3 in just 26 overs.
The second victory came over Stockport, as 78 from Joe Hopkins helped us to 173/9. Stockport folded to 74 all out in reply (Andy Heath 3/32).
The 3rd team currently sit one place off the bottom of the 2nd Division and any senior players who would like to play and take some of the pressure off our younger players are asked to contact Bryan Thompson or Pete Heath to discuss their availability.

LEGENDS FLYING HIGH
More Poynton success in the Over 40s Championship, with three more comfortable victories for the Legends. Woodley managed only 91/9 with great bowling from Damian Stringer (4/15) and Pete Heath (3/16). Jim Wilde and Doug Martin led the way with 31 retired each as we strolled to 92/0 in only 15 overs.
Facing a stiffer chase of 114 against Bramhall, another unbeaten 31 from Doug, plus 27 from Bryan Thompson and 20 not out from Damian Stringer saw us to a seven wicket win.
Macclesfield saw us reach the heights of 135/2, with Brian Kingham hitting the maximum possible 35 retired after passing 30 with a six. Damien Mullany, Damian Stringer and Doug all scored in the 20s. Macc could only reply with 118/6 and another victory was ours.
