Communications Manager JOB SUMMARY

As part of the professional staff of Sound Outreach Services, the Communications Manager operates under the general supervision of the Executive Director, within the policies established by the articles of incorporation, the board-approved policy and procedures manual, bylaws, resolutions, fund agreements and guidelines duly adopted, and as consistent with applicable federal, state and local laws.

The Communications Manager will identify, define, and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as the general operating funds for the organization. Primary responsibilities include:

60% Preparation and composition of grants and reports

20% Website and social media management

15% Data and outcome oversight of agency programs

5%Event assistance and other duties as assigned

*Graphic design experience preferred and a Communications Manager with graphic design experience would be asked to spend time designing marketing materials.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Grant Funding/Corporate & Private Funding Solicitation
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify and research diverse and relevant funding sources.
  • Generate revenuefor the agency by preparing well-researched, well-written, and well-documented grant requests. This includes and all supporting documents and materials (letters of intent, proposals, cover letters, e-mails, etc.).
  • Complete reports to funders.
  • Maintain donor management system with the Director of Community Relations.
  • Maintain and implement grants and reporting calendars.
  • Work with the Finance Manager to make budgets for grants.
  • Public Relations and Marketing
  • Have a thorough understanding of all Sound Outreach programs.
  • Update and maintain the Sound Outreach website (WordPress) and the domain information.
  • Design and develop press releases, newsletters, annual reports and other marketing materials.
  • Ensure that all communications are cohesive and properly use the Sound Outreach brand.
  • Produce program flyers, brochures, and program visuals (preferred skill)
  • Create invitations, programs, sponsorship packets, and signage for fundraising events (preferred skill)
  • Other Duties
  • Coordinate and compile monthly client data into reports.
  • Co-administrator for Gmail accounts.
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Director of Community Relations to coordinate fundraising events.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals with extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate a variety of data.
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Event planning experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two year experience in communications, graphic design, grant writing, nonprofit administration, and/or fundraising.
  • BA in related field.
  • An ability to work independently.
  • Experience working in cooperation with Executive director, Board, staff, and volunteers.
  • Excellent computer skills; ability to easily learn new software and web-based programs quickly.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop desired.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the functions of the job, the Communications Manager will work in an office sitting at a desk, with out-of-office duties including grants trainings, presentations to funders, and fundraising event related activities.
