Diane Ravitch at the City Club
Summary of discussion comments. Poverty is greatest predictor of test scores. We are so focused on testing that we are hurting our students. It would have been nice for her to give recommendations to how to tackle poverty in the classroom.
Essential Content (K. Still): Report from Essential Content Sub-Team
Kristine Still presented the results of the essential content subcommittee. Discussion took place regarding meeting needs of all learners, what teaching is all about, diversity, broaden context to the community, academic and social diversity. Classroom management techniques and curriculum and teaching methods were included. Dick Hurwitz emphasized that we are simply looking at the content and not the avenue to apply it at this time. The team identified items of essential content in the Sub-Team draft, and added others.
Dick will compile all of the identified essential content items and will send the list to Kristine. The Essential Content Sub-Team will organize and “massage” it and send it around for comments. The hope is to have a draft ready for the next CREATE Team meeting on February 29.
Program Standards (B. Harper): Report from Standards Sub-Team
The Standards Sub-Team examined CSU and state standards. The Sub-Team decided to use the state standards as a starting point while clarifying language and making sure that important aspects of the CSU standards were included. The next Program Standards Sub-Team meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 22nd.
Program Models: Reports from Team Members.
Work sheets were handed out to enable note taking.
Erin Herbruck reviewed the Wisconsin model and the St. Cloud model.
