Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses, CSA approved steel-toed boots/shoes, dust mask if required

GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces and or bracelets should be removed. Long hair should be tied back; strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed.

Job Safety Analysis:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
1 / Select correct saw and blade according to its use. Ensure saw blade is secure and installed correctly with teeth pointing forward. Never use saws with bent, buckled, twisted or cracked blades. / Person injury from incorrect maintenance, installation or using the wrong saw and or blade for the intended task. Personal injury due to defective or damaged saw and or blade / Always inspect saw and blade prior to use. Handle saw and blade with caution.
2 / Wear your safety glasses or a face-shield. Start cut carefully and slowly to prevent blade from jumping. Pull upward until blade bites. Start with a partial cut, and then set saw at proper angle. Apply pressure on the down stroke only. Use entire length of the blade in each cutting stroke. Hold work piece being cut firmly in place. Use a co-worker, a supporting bench or vise to secure and or support work piece if required. / Eye injury/irritation from dust and debris discharged during sawing. Personal injury due to improper sawing technique. / Wear your safety glasses. Take your time, start off slowly.
3 / Keep hand/fingers at a safe distance from cutting line. Use a support bench or get assistance from co-worker to catch cut off stock. / Hand / finger laceration or amputation from contact with saw blade. Leg and or foot injury from cut off stock falling.
Burns/laceration from Metal stock that may be hot and sharp. / Pay attention do not get distracted, watch placement of hand/s and fingers. Use support bench or get assistance to catch cut off stock. Wear CSA approved footwear.
4 / When finished clean up area and put away tools. If blade is cracked,bent, buckled, twisted do not put away. Give the damaged tool to teacher. / Slip, trip or fall
Personal injury using saw if blade is damaged / Clean up area, use a broom and dust pan. Do not put away damaged tools.
