Membership Meeting Minutes - June 6, 2015

The meeting was held at the John Gella Memorial American Legion Post 219 in Fruitland Park and opened by President Ralph Nelson at 11:00 AM. Compatriot Moody gave the invocation. The color guard posted the colors. Compatriot Hardwich led the Pledge of Allegiance. Compatriot Bussone led members in the SAR Pledge.

Attendance:

There were 28 members and 6 guests: Kay Nelson, Sylvia West, Frances Langston, Bruce Dow, Jerry Barnes, Myra Bushnell, and Chris Hermann.

Approve Minutes:

The minutes for the last meeting had been sent to the membership and were approved without objection.

Reports:

1st VP Jerry Hardwich thanked all the previous presenters from last year and asked for recommendations for future presentations.

Treasurer David Bussone reported that the finances and budget were in good shape and recommended that the treasurer’s report be filed for audit. It was recommended that a simple explanation of the report be prepared by the Treasurer and sent out to all members by the Secretary.

Registrar John Moore reported that there are currently 79 chapter members and the goal is to have 100. Chaplin Bob Moody reportedon a member in the hospital.

JROTC & Eagle Scout Programs Bill Hayes reported that many awards were presented.

Color Guard Commander Glenn Langston asked for names of members who could join him for the 4th of July parade in Tavares. They will meet at 4:00 PM.

Announcements:

Newsletter: If anyone did not get a newsletter they are to email Frank Nolte. Frank said help is needed with the newsletter and the taking of pictures. Frank is willing to teach anyone how to operate the camera if requested.

Tricorn Hats: Scott Bushnell reported that he has some tricorn hats that he is willing to donate to the chapter.

Prayer at Valley Forge: Scott Bushnelltransmitted to John Moore a framed print that had been donated to the chapter and asked if he could put it on EBay or auction it to chapter members.

Interment Participation: Ralph Nelson invited any interested members to join him at agraveside interment service for Robert White -- a member of the Caloosa Chapter -- on June 15, 2015, at 11:30 AM at the Pine Forest Cemetery in Mount Dora, Florida.

Speaker:

2ndVice President Allan Lane introduced Bruce Dow,owner of Dow Arms Room in Dade City, Florida,as the presenter for the meeting. Mr. Dow’s presentation focused on the developmental history and service of the M1 Garand from 1918 through the Korean War. The President presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Dow after the presentation.

Old Business:

-- Scott Bushnell reported about the Governor’s Veterans Service Awards medal ceremony he attended on May 27, 2015 in Orlando. Other presentations of the metal are planned in cities throughout the state. Information is available from FDVA online.

-- Scott Bushnell reported on a Revolutionary War video “April Morning” about the battles of Lexington and Concord.

-- Scott Bushnell reported on the TV show “TURN” episode showing the “Turtle” submarine, invented by David Bushnell and used by the Americans during the Revolutionary War.

-- George Chaffee submitted a report on flags placed at the Lone Oak Cemetery for Memorial Day. Compatriots Richard Baxter, Bob Beightol, George Chaffee, Dough Dick, Mick Dick, Bill Hayes, Bob Krey, Basil Linville, Bob Moody, Ken Mosher, Ralph Nelson, and Ron Toops participated.

Awards:

The Presidentpresented a 30-years tenure pin to Ken Mosher.

On behalf of the Florida Society SAR the President presented a Roger Sherman Medal to Bob Moody

The President noted that he had received from the Florida Society SARa Roger Sherman Oak Leaf Cluster and a Meritorious Service Medal.

Induction of New Members:

No new members were inducted, but amembership packet is being held for Ron Bock.

Member Donations:

A collection of $55.00 was donated to the Chapter.

Closing:

The colors were retired and the meeting closed approximately around 1:30 PM.
