Meet Haile Satayin
Who is Haile Satayin?
Haile Satayin is a runner. In 2008, at the age of 53, he was the oldest runner on the Israeli Olympics team in Beijing, China. He was also the oldest athlete in the Olympic Games.
Haile Satayin was born in Ethiopia in April 1955. He came to Israel in 1991. At first his work was to train young runners. Then he stopped working and started to run full-time.
Why is Haile famous?
Haile has won the national title for different races 26 times. In 2004, Haile ran on the Israeli Olympic team in Athens, Greece. He ran 41.8 kilometers in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 25 seconds (2.17.25). Haile takes part in marathons in Europe and at the Wingate Sports Institute.
How does Haile do it?
When Haile is training for a competition, he gets up at 4:30 a.m. He runs more than 200 kilometers a week. To run a marathon, he needs a lot of energy. Eating healthy foods and drinking a lot of water give him the energy he needs.
What about the future?
A sports reporter asked Haile, "When will you be too old to run marathons?" Haile answered, "Never. My age says that I am old, but my heart is young."
