IC PARISH NURSE MISSION STATEMENT: To enhance the overall health of our parishioners (mind, body, spirit) with a focus on integrating the practice of faith with the practice of nursing.

PROGRAMS

The Blood Pressure Clinics continues to be held monthly on the last full weekend of the month. We continue to gain new participants each month. The next BP clinics will be held on January 27 and 28, February24 and 25 and March24 and25.

Upcoming Programs:

Bonnie’s Bus will return for mammograms on March 16, 2018. Watch the bulletin for registration information.

Also watch for: More information about the continuation of the bereavement group which will resume in March.

HEALTH TIPS FOR THIS QUARTER

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month: Ladies be sure to keep regular appointments with your OB/GYN provider.

February is National Heart Month. Know that signs of a Heart Attack can include Shortness of Breath, Chest pain, neck, jaw or back pain that does not subside.

March is Colorectal Awareness Month. Please discuss the recommendations for Colonoscopy frequency for yourself based on any symptoms and/or family history.

What can you do to be safe in winter weather?

  1. Dress in layers to keep warm. Be sure to wear gloves and hats
  2. Wear boots or shoes with good tread to help avoid falls
  3. Keep steps and walkways free of ice and snow?
  4. Be sure furnaces are in good working order including changing filters.
  5. Be sure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors are in working order.
  6. Most important, if you don’t have to go out in severe weather, stay home.

HEALTHY RECIPE

Vegetable Soup

3garlic clovesminced

3tablespoonsolive oil

1smallwinter squashbutternut, acorn, or kabocha work well, peeled, seeds removed, and cubed

2smallsweet potatoescubed

3-4smallcarrotsdiced

4cupsvegetable broth

4cupswater

1tablespoondried parsley

salt and pepperto taste

2cupscooked garbanzo beans

2cupscooked quinoaoptional

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the minced garlic, olive oil, and the chopped vegetables. Stir to combine, and cook over medium-high heat until the vegetables start to soften, about 6-8 minutes.
  2. Stir in the vegetable broth, water, parsley, and a few pinches of salt and pepper. Bring the soup to a boil, then partially cover the pot and simmer on medium heat until the vegetables are fork-tender, about 20 minutes.

Taste the soup and add a few more pinches of salt, if needed. Stir in the cooked garbanzo beans and quinoa, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Serve
