Students, Parents, Teachers, and Community –

Together, Helping Every HAWK SOAR INTO THE FUTURE

It is with a continuation of profound pride in our school and community that I welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year at Mountain View Elementary/Middle School. The West Virginia Department of Education is currently analyzing last year’s summative assessment data and results will be forwarded to students/parents as they become available.

Our first day of school will be Monday, August 17th, 2015 and the school hours of operation are 8:10am to 3:40pm. Instruction begins at 8:30am and elements of daily dismissal begin with our first bus dismissal at 3:20pm. PLEASE NOTE THAT CARPOOL HOURS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO 4:00PM DISMISSAL TIME. Unless you have changed residency during the summer, your child will be able to attend Mountain View. It is important to take care of any residence changes prior to the first day of school. New student registration will be offered at the school on Thursday, August 6th, 2015 from 10am to 6pm. To welcome our students and parents, as well as answer any questions, we will have an Open House on Friday, August 14th, 2015 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. I invite you to meet our faculty/staff and tour our facilities.

To assist in preparing for the new school year, please review the following elements:

·  Enclosed is a sticker illustrating your student’s teacher assignment/homeroom.

·  Please ensure that you know your child’s bus number, bus stop, time to expect your child to be picked up and dropped off, and that your child boards the assigned bus. Your child will need to be at the bus stop at least 10 minutes prior to pick-up time.

·  Car pool tags can be obtained on August 14th during Open House. Parents must remain with their car in the car pool lane and proceed through the designated drop-off and pick-up area (back parking lot) until the child has been dropped off or picked up. THIS ELEMENT IS A NECESSITY DUE TO CHANGE OF TIME FOR CARPOOL AND ROTATION OF STAFF. Reminder – Carpool begins at 4:00pm and no changes in bus, carpool, or pick-up can occur after 2:30pm.

·  Due to the management and logistics of serving and protecting our students, NO VISITERS are permitted on campus from 2:30pm until the conclusion of bus dismissal. This will allow our faculty and staff to ensure students are placed on buses and in designated areas for security.

·  No child should be on campus prior to 7:30am due to supervision issues, and all students should be under direct supervision of a teacher/coach if on campus after 4:10pm. Therefore, please ensure your understanding in reference to bus routes, carpool, walkers, etc. All bus change or dismissal requests should be received in the main office by 2:30pm.

·  In reference to SAFE SCHOOLS, no one is allowed past the doorway located in the commons area. All parents and visitors should report directly to the office, and visitor’s passes will only be provided if the parent has a scheduled meeting. Our school will continue to prepare and perform drills in the areas of fire drill, severe weather drill, lock down, etc. Also, please contact Ms. Toby McMahan in reference to Parent Volunteer Training. All adults must have this training to volunteer in the classroom and/or attend school functions such as field trips, etc.

·  Students needing to leave school early must bring a note from a parent/guardian stating the student’s name, time leaving, a daytime phone number for verification and reason for leaving. The student will report to the attendance/front office upon arrival for an early dismissal form. The student will show their teacher the dismissal form when they are leaving. Students will not be released to anyone other than a parent without pre-authorized written permission. When the parent/guardian comes to pick up the student at school, they must sign out in the Main Office. Classroom instruction cannot be interrupted for early dismissals, so please follow the above procedures unless there is an extreme emergency.

·  The above note procedure should also be followed for those students needing to walk off campus after school.

·  MVEMS School Access Module will require identification upon permissible entry into the building.

·  While parents are welcome to visit classrooms, all classes/grades encompass guidelines through WVDE and require an environment conducive to learning. Therefore, it is requested that visitation be minimal, be supported via Volunteer Training, and require a 24-hour prior approval to ensure equity and quality of instruction for all students in the class.

·  EdLine Passwords will remain the same as last year. New student passwords will be distributed by homeroom teachers.

·  If you need to meet with the Principal or Assistant Principal, please call 304-772-4903 to schedule an appointment.

·  As your child receives information during the first few weeks of school, please review these materials to ensure understanding in reference to academics, attendance, and discipline policies: Positive School Climate via the “Respect and Protect” Program. And please review your students’ assignment book for policies and procedures.

·  Kindergarten AND Pre-K classes will begin on August 24th; teachers will be in contact to schedule home visits beginning August 17th.

Please visit our website at http://www.edline.net/pages/mountain_view_elementary___mid containing news, calendar, teacher info, curriculum information, etc. Also, you can sign up for REMIND alerts under the NEWS section of our website to receive text messages direct to the daily operation of our school. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to join the PTO and Athletic Boosters Club. These are two of several elements within our school that offer parents the opportunity to become involved in the education of our youth. Please feel free to contact our main office for information imparting parent opportunities at Mountain View Elementary/Middle School.

We are looking forward to great school year!
