MTS B 321 Introduction to Hebrew Exegesis I Fall 2017
Paula S. Hiebert T and F 9:00-10:50 AM; RoomTBA
Aim
This course is the first half of an introduction to the Biblical Hebrew language. The second half is Introduction to Hebrew Exegesis II, offered during the spring semester. Together these courses are designed to provide a basic knowledge of Biblical Hebrew grammar and vocabulary, as well as the skills to study and interpret the text of the Hebrew Bible in the context of ministry.
Textbook
Jo Ann Hackett, A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew, with CD. Peabody, Massachusetts:
Hendrickson, 2010. (ISBN: 978-1-59856-028-2)
Requirements
- Attendance and participation in class (10%). You should plan to arrive on time and be prepared to participate in all class sessions.
- Written exercises (20%). The exercises assigned in each class should be completed by the following class session. A deduction in the grade will be made for exercises that are late. Please contact me if circumstances prevent your completion of a particular assignment on time.
- Quizzes (20%). Beginning Tuesday, September 12, each class session will begin with a quiz. Though each quiz will emphasize material covered in the previous class, you should keep in mind that language learning is cumulative by nature. Therefore, the quizzes will always be cumulative. Your two lowest quiz grades, based on the total number of quizzes given, will be dropped before I calculate your quiz average.
Information to keep in mind concerning the Quizzes:
- Arriving on time for each class is imperative as it is only the first 15 minutes of class that will be allotted for the quiz. Arriving late for class means that you will have less time to complete the quiz.
- If you miss a quiz because of an absence, you may make it up. Contact me as soon as possible (but no later than the day you return to class) to make arrangements to take the missed quiz.
- Tardiness, especially a pattern of tardiness, is not a legitimate reason for requesting to make up a quiz. Please do let me know if your lateness for a particular class is due to circumstances beyond your control, in which case you will be allowed to make up the quiz.
- Exams (15%, 15%, 20%). There will be three exams during the semester. The first and second exams are each worth 15% and the third exam is worth 20%. The dates for the exams are identified on the course schedule. Like the quizzes, the exams will be cumulative.
