President Maidique and I are very pleased to inform you that Dr. George E. Dambach will become our Vice President for Research effective January 15, 2004.

Dr. Dambach brings excellent research leadership and management credentials to his new assignment. He served as Vice President for Research at WayneStateUniversity from 1998 to 2003. During this period, he helped to reorganize and modernize Wayne's research administration and helped grow the institution's research expenditures by 45 percent, leading to improved national rankings in research each year. Prior to this university-wide leadership position, Dr. Dambach held numerous posts in the School of Medicine at WayneStateUniversity. From 1974 to 1980, he was associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology, then assumed administrative posts successively as Assistant Dean for Curricular

Affairs (1980-1987), Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Programs (1987-1991), and then Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs (1991-1998).

He received his bachelor's degree in Physiology in 1964 and his Ph.D. in Pharmacology (1968) from the OhioStateUniversity. He was a Postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, Philadelphia GeneralHospital, in Philadelphia (1968-1969); he then served as a Postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and the Institute for Neuroscience, at the University of Pennsylvania(1969-1972) and was a Pennsylvania Plan Scholar at the university from 1972-1974.

Dr. Dambach brings experience in medical and life sciences to his new leadership position. He served on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, 1999, Faculty Fellow, Accreditation Review of Albert EinsteinSchool of Medicine. He has been active in numerous initiatives in Michigan to advance the state-of-the art in health and life sciences research, including participation in the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor Planning Committee and the Detroit Medical Center Strategic Initiatives Steering Committee. He has also been a member of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council, Inc. Advisory Committee on Health Policy, Research and Education, and of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ralph C. Wilson Sr. and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Medical Research Foundation. In addition, he assisted the March of Dimes Foundation in development of a national Ph.D. and Post Doctoral training program.

While he was in Detroit, he also took an active leadership role in community concerns. He is a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Karmanos Cancer Institute and the National Advisory Board of the Merrill Palmer Institute for Child and Family Development and served in numerous roles for the Michigan Heart Association.

In his new assignment, Dr. Dambach will provide leadership to maintain and accelerate our progress as a Carnegie-Research Extensive institution of higher education. He will also develop and implement a strategy to expand the capabilities of the Division of Sponsored Research and Training. We are particularly interested in enhancing our capacity to respond to the needs of research-oriented deans and their principal investigators. Finally, we believe that Dr. Dambach will play a key role in helping us expand our capabilities in health-related research and training through our Health and Medical Education Initiative.

We want to thank members of the University community for their confidence and support in carrying out the expedited search for Dr. Thomas Breslin's successor. We know that Dr. Dambach will be instrumental in helping us to move forward our research enterprise.
