Total credit hours: 36 Classroom credit hours: 24 Lab credit hours: 12

Proposed Implementation Date: FALL 2004

Please attach to this proposal a narrative with the following information:

A.  Statement of major focus and objectives of the revised option.

NOTE: HERS is responding to CAAHEP/JRC accreditation standards and this revision represents an increase in the variable credit practicum requirement from 1-4 to 1-5 credits. Students will be required to enroll into one additional practicum credit to increase the option from 34 to 35 credit hours. This option was recently revised and approved by A2C2 in April 2004 and this request is to correct an oversight in the original submission.

The Exercise and Rehabilitative Science: Athletic Training Option is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). In addition to the academic coursework requirements, students are required to complete clinical education experience and fieldwork experiences (as assigned by the Athletic Training Program Director). Following completion of the clinical education and academic requirements of the major, a student will be eligible for national certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).

Students interested in the Exercise and Rehabilitative Science: Athletic Training Option must apply to the program, participate in a competitive selection process, and adhere to published retention guidelines.

Winona State University has a long-standing tradition of graduates that become certified athletic trainers and positively contribute to the allied health profession of athletic training. Graduates have secured positions with professional teams, semi-professional teams, Olympic teams, as University Head Athletic Trainers, as Athletic Training Clinical Directors, and as Clinic-High School athletic trainers. Graduates have also gone on to graduate school in athletic training, human performance, exercise physiology, physical therapy, physician’s assistant, and chiropractic school.

FINANCIAL AND STAFFING DATA SHEET

Include a Financial and Staffing Data Sheet with any proposal for a revised program:

EXERCISE AND REHABILITATIVE SCIENCE: ATHLETIC TRAINING OPTION

HERS 362 Athletic Training Practicum

Please answer the following questions completely. Provide supporting data.

1.  Would this course be taught with existing staff or with new/additional staff? If this course would be taught by adjunct faculty, include a rationale.

HERS recently revised (approved by A2C2 April 04) it’s Athletic Training option and this one credit increase in the variable practicum was an oversight in the original revision. This course is and will continue to be taught with existing certified staff.

2.  What impact would approval of this course have on current course offerings? Please discuss number of sections of current offerings, dropping of courses, etc.

There is no impact on other departmental course offerings. Certified Athletic trainers serve as clinical instructors during the practicum rotations.

3.  What effect would approval of this course have on the department budget? Include data to support expenditures for staffing, equipment, supplies, instructional resources, etc.

There is no additional expense to the department by increasing the variable credit practicum from 4 to 5 credits.
