A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PHILANTHROPY OF BUSINESSMAN LARRY W. PAUL, OF HORRY COUNTY, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR THE FORESIGHT THAT INSPIRED HIM TO COLLECT AND DONATE NUMEROUS VALUABLE ARTIFACTS TO THE HORRY COUNTY MUSEUM.

Whereas, the General Assembly of South Carolina wishes to express profound appreciation to Larry Paul who has generously donated to the Horry County Museum a significant collection of artifacts, unique not only because they display rural life in South Carolina from 1900 to 1955, but also because they were used on a daily basis by ordinary people; and

Whereas, consisting of arrowheads, old farm wagons, handpowered washing machines, and centuryold stoves, the collection also includes farm equipment relics that Larry Paul used when he was growing up; and

Whereas, exemplifying business acumen as a teenager, he borrowed money from his father to invest in one hundred dayold chickens, and months later, after they began laying, he carried their eggs to Conway where he sold them for fifty cents a dozen; and

Whereas, for decades, he ran L. W. Paul Construction Company and built houses, and more recently, he has invested in land and sold it to developers; he also runs a storage business; and

Whereas, among other philanthropic ventures, he contributed to Conway’s Theatre of the Republic last year when he helped the theatre to buy a neighboring building; and

Whereas, not willing that the taxpayers be burdened with the expense of displaying his sizeable contribution, appraised at one hundred eightysix thousand dollars, Larry Paul also donated four hundred thousand dollars to the historical farm project; and

Whereas, wood from trees chopped down to clear that property will be used to build the structures on the farm, which will include a visitor’s center, an old farm house, grits and sugar cane mills; the farm will include field crops and livestock as well; and

Whereas, believing that small rural farmers formed the character that built our great State and nation, he hopes that the artifacts displayed in the museum will enable people to view farm life and that the farm will provide a place where they can experience it; and

Whereas, desiring to leave a legacy to ensure that people for generations to come will know what constituted life on a family farm, Larry Paul has made the largest donation of American Indian and agricultural artifacts the Horry County Museum has ever received. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the philanthropy of businessman Larry W. Paul, of Horry County, and commend him for the foresight that inspired him to collect and donate numerous valuable artifacts to the Horry County Museum.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Larry W. Paul.
