Job Statement

The TBAP Head of Residential Therapeutic Services will be responsible for the strategic development, leadership and overall management of the TBAP Residential Therapeutic Services Department. This includes taking responsibility and accountability for the direct provision of an autonomous and specialist clinical service, alongside offering specialist 1:1 or group sessions to primary and secondary age learners of a diverse culture who all present with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Key responsibilities

·  To strategically develop and manage a highly effective therapeutic service, that meets the needs of the young people accessing the residential provision

·  To work collaboratively with all TBAP provisions in managing transitions for young people entering and leaving the residential service

·  To streamline practice and procedures in conjunction with all TBAP sites

·  To assist in the development of a TBAP model of evidence based practice through observation and the systematic collection and analysis of data

·  To provide specialist clinical supervision and line management to TBAP therapists at the Residence.

·  To work jointly and collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team in order to enhance and develop services to meet the needs of learners

·  To work in partnership with a range of other services including CAMHS, MST and WLAC

·  To manage and maintain a clinical case load in accordance with other responsibilities

Managerial responsibilities:

1.  To build and manage a therapeutic team that will effectively meet the needs of the young people accessing the TBAP residential provision

2.  To provide specialist clinical supervision and clinical guidance to the TBAP residential therapeutic team in order to ensure best practice

3.  To manage all therapeutic aspects of the transition of young people moving between TBAP provisions and the TBAP residential service

4.  To support the development of a TBAP model of evidence based practice through observation and the systematic collection and analysis of data

5.  To streamline practice and procedures in conjunction with all TBAP sites, which incorporates all aspects of therapeutic intervention (such as referral and assessment procedures, clinical report writing, clinical supervision, data collection, communication and liaison with the wider school staff team and the MDT, production of therapeutic literature and evidencing practice).

6.  To oversee effective and appropriate working practice within the TBAP residential service (with regards to session number/ length/ duration and so on)

7.  To arrange and oversee staff clinical supervision and group reflection sessions

8.  To work in partnership with a range of other services including CAMHS, MST and WLAC in order to provide a robust care package for learners within TBAP provisions.

9.  To work jointly and collaboratively with other members of the wider residential team in order to enhance and develop services to meet the needs of learners. This entails liaison and collaboration with teachers, support staff, middle management and SLT.

10.  To further develop evidence based practice by integrating individual clinical expertise (through observation and the systematic collection of data) with external clinical evidence in order to evaluate, develop and amend current practice within the TBAP Trust.

11.  To attend TBAP and external meetings where appropriate

12.  To ensure that the TBAP residential service has adequate therapeutic intervention (therapists) in order to provide a robust intervention for learners

13.  To manage the therapeutic team budget, ensuring that all provisions are well resourced (equipment)

Clinical responsibilities:

1. To plan and prioritise a client caseload and to deliver a therapeutic service to young people attending the TBAP residential provision.

2. To manage difficult and demanding clinical situations arising from working with clients with challenging social, emotional and behavioural needs, including exploring complex, sensitive and sometimes disturbing personal issues in both group and 1:1 contexts with clients.

3. To possess excellent communication and listening skills and have an understanding of the key issues impacting on young people’s lives today.

4. To apply clinical knowledge and skills in 1:1 and group interventions with clients with complex needs.

5. To keep a variety of up-to-date clinical records of work carried out and write regular reports as required. Reports will be both verbal and written and will be accessible to therapists, the MDT, the wider staff team, clients and parents/carers as appropriate.

6. To work as part of a wider school team and liaise with members of staff, parents and carers in the best interests of each young person.

7. To provide support and guidance to staff, enabling them to better identify and support learners with their emotional well-being. This can be implemented in a variety of different ways such as creating and delivering case studies and making end of term reports available to the wider school staff team.

8. To work flexibly according to the demands of the service and to perform duties within the competence of the post holder. This may include referring onto external agencies with appropriate consent from clients or parents and carers (such as CAMHS, WLAC or MST).

9. To attend case conferences, handovers, CP or CIN meetings, Annual Reviews and other clinical meetings, when possible, taking responsibility for communicating with professionals within the wider MDT and clients’ families and carers, within the boundaries of confidentiality.

10. To evaluate effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, in conjunction with clients/carers, other professionals and so on.

11. To apply evidence based practice.

12. To attend regular line management meetings and to line manage a team of therapists.

13. To take up external specialist clinical supervision or consultation.

14. To maintain client confidentiality within reason, analysing and making decisions about when that confidentiality needs to be breached.

15. Any disclosures of risk or harm/danger to the client must be reported to the on-site CPO and recorded immediately. All reporting procedures must be followed and adhered to under your professional remit, school practices and Local Authority Safeguarding Procedures.

16. To provide written information on aims and objectives of the work in order to promote and develop the identity of the therapeutic service by means of displays, leaflets, newsletters and presentations.

17. To be responsible for the maintenance of the therapeutic space as a safe and secure therapeutic environment within clinical sessions.

18. To promote the protection and safeguarding of learners through the active implementation of relevant school policies and procedures with particular reference to: child protection policy, safe touch policy, positive behaviour policy and the staff code of conduct, and to raise any concerns relating to such procedures which may be noted during the course of duty.

19. To Practice good personal time-management, consistency and reliability.

20. To promote and apply equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory interventions that respect the clients’ customs, values and spiritual beliefs at all times.

Policy/Service Development/Implementation:

1.  Adhere to TBAP Trust procedures and policies.

2.  To abide by the TBAP Trust’s systems, policies and general working practices during on and off-site activities pertaining to the therapeutic engagement, particularly in areas of Health and Safety, Risk Assessment, Safeguarding and confidentiality.

3.  To maintain registration with the HCPC (if applicable) and be aware of, and comply with policy and requirements of registration and professional bodies (BACP, UKCP, HCPC, BPS, BAAT, BAMT for example)

4.  To ensure the service provided to clients is culturally sensitive and responsive to the ethnic diversity within the TBAP provision.

5.  To actively participate in audits in relation to service evaluation and review.

6.  To attend relevant professional and service development meetings, for example TBAP Network Therapeutic Team Meetings and TBAP twilight sessions.

7.  Therapists contracted by the TBAP Trust are not permitted to make private arrangements with other schools or agencies linked to the TBAP Trust during their employment. This will breech the contract and all therapy services may be terminated. As such, therapists are not permitted to disclose information without the school and parent’s overall consent. This includes: personal telephone contact, reports, photos, publications or other services.

8.  All complaints must be directed to the Head of Residence in the first instance and to follow the correct complaints procedure within the school. However, any member of staff can be dismissed for improper and unprofessional conduct.

9.  The Executive Head retains the right to implement changes to this Job Description to reflect changes in the demands of the post in consultation with you.

10.  You will be required to have a valid Enhanced DSB disclosure that will be re-checked every 3 years as per the TBAP Trust Policy.

11.  To take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and any other person(s) who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions at work, in accordance with the Health & Safety legislation.

12.  To complete and submit all necessary invoices to the TBAP Finance Team.

13.  To ensure that any service user complaints or incidents are reported accurately and investigated appropriately, making clinical team members aware.

14.  To ensure own continued personal and professional development is met through training and educational opportunities.

15.  Participate in yearly Performance Management Reviews.

16.  To take on trainees in line with local policy guidelines.

17.  To act as supervisor for trainees on placement where appropriate and maintain links with relevant training bodies.

18.  To engage in effective management liaison.

Information resources:

1.  To carry out administrative tasks as required for the smooth running of the department.

2.  To ensure that accurate and current service information is available to clients and parents/carers, and to provide as necessary to allocated caseload.

3.  To ensure that client’s clinical material is securely stored.

4.  To ensure that client’s clinical material is safely and confidentially transported to and from external clinical supervision sessions and clinical review meetings.

1. To plan and prioritise a client caseload in accordance with other responsibilities.

2. To keep abreast of new developments and research in your relevant field.

3. To participate in activities related to clinical effectiveness via audit, research and evidence based practice.
