Vinyl Plastisols
Vinyl plastisols are a mixture of vinyl ______, compatible plasticizers, and other additivessuch as stabilizers and color pigment. Vinyl plastisols are developed for a range of ______. They can be used for dipping, coating or ______. Once heat ______ (300-400 F degrees) the stiffness of the material can range from the softness of a fishing lure to the near hardness of aluminum.
Background Information
Plastisols have become familiar material to thousands of manufactures making such diverse products as rain boots, upholstery, fabrics, foam cushions, coating, plating racks and tanks, drum linings, coating window screens, tool handle coating, coin purses and fishing lures. The original patent was issued to the B.F. Goodrich chemical company in 1947. They introduced the first vinyl resin designed for making plastisol.
Advantages: 1. Full range of color and flexibility.
2. Resists attack from most solvents and chemicals.
3. Protects metal from corrosion.
4. Coating is tough and resilient.
5. Can be decorative.
Disadvantages: 1. Thickness can vary because of the dripping off at the
bottom of the mold.
2. A drop is formed at the bottom because of drip off.
3. Items with small holes tend to fill up with material.
Vinyl Dispersion Directions
Materials Needed: 1. Plastisol Equipment Needed: 1. Workbench
2. Molds 2. Electric Oven
3. Newspaper 3. Leather gloves
4. Cleanup material 4. Pliers
5. Utility knife
6. Bucket of water
Procedures:
A. Casting (Fishing bait, gummy frog, etc. –flexible products)
1) Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
2) Using Plastisol #16 (squeeze bottle), fill the desired mold cavity.
3) Place the mold in the oven for about 10-15 minutes or until the material appears shiny or transparent.
4) Wearing leather gloves, remove the mold from the oven.
5) Place in a bucket of cold water for approximately 1-2 minutes.
6) Remove material from the mold.
B. Dip Mandrel (Coin purse, funnel, etc. – medium hardness)
1) Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
2) Place mold in oven for 15-20 minutes.
3) Using pliers, remove the mold from oven.
4) Holding mandrel at the top of the hook with pliers, dip it into the #65 plastisol for about 2 minutes.
5) Slowly withdraw from the plastisol, allow the dripping to stop and then carefully hang it in the oven. Be very careful not to allow the material to touch anything or it will be damaged. Allow it to cure for 15 minutes.
6) Remove from the oven and place in a bucket of cold water.
7) Use a utility knife to cut a slice in the material and remove from the mold.
C. Slush Casting (Football tee, doorstop, etc. – hard)
1) Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
2) Place mold in oven for 20 minutes.
3) Weather leather gloves, remove the mold from the oven.
4) Fill the mold cavity with #90 or #97 Plastisol.
5) Let it stand for 2-3 minutes.
6) Wearing leather gloves, pour the remaining unsolidified material back into the container.
7) Return the mold to the oven for 15 minutes.
8) Remove the mold from the oven and place it into the bucket of cold water.
9) Remove object from the mold.
10) Trim any flashing.
