A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND DR. HERB BERG, SUPERINTENDENT OF THE KERSHAW COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, FOR HIS ABLE AND EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP OF THIS SUCCESSFUL AND INNOVATIVE SCHOOL DISTRICT UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS SUPERINTENDENT AND TO EXTEND TO HIM THE VERY BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY AND ENJOYABLE RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives have learned with deep regret that one of South Carolina’s most distinguished school administrators, Dr. Herb Berg, Superintendent of the Kershaw County School District, will be retiring on June 30, 2007.
Whereas, Herb Berg became Superintendent of the Kershaw County School District in March 2003. This is his thirty-fifth year as a school district superintendent, having served in three different states; and
Whereas, under his leadership, the school district has achieved many major accomplishments, including the following:
(1) standardized test scores that rank above the state average in almost every case;
(2) the awardwinning iCAN laptop program, which provides oneonone computer access for Kershaw County high school students and their teachers;
(3) the percentage of Kershaw County teachers who are national board certified has risen to fourteen percent, the ninth highest in the State; and
(4) the 102.2 million dollar facilities equalization program which will better enable students across the county to have equal opportunities for learning, regardless of where they live; and
Whereas, with his help, the Kershaw County School Board voted in 2004 to supply laptop computers to all two thousand nine hundred of the district’s high school students and their two hundred seventy-five teachers over a fouryear period. Kershaw County is the first and only school district in South Carolina to provide wireless laptops for all its high school students through its iCAN initiative. All of the district’s twenty schools are wireless. As a result of this initiative and other reasons, he was named one of ten TechSavvy Superintendents of the Year in the nation by eSchool News; and
Whereas, in addition to serving as a local school superintendent, he also served as the executive director for the Association for the Advancement of International Education for two years just prior to coming to Kershaw County. He has been twice named to the Top 100 North American Executive Educators by Executive Educators Magazine; and
Whereas, this wonderful educator is devoted to his lovely wife, Paula, and they are now the proud grandparents of a new granddaughter, Sofia, daughter of their son, Peter, and his wife, Marta; and
Whereas, it is fitting that the members of the House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to publicly recognize and thank this truly fine man and outstanding educator for his contributions to Kershaw County and the State of South Carolina upon his retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Dr. Herb Berg, Superintendent of Kershaw County School District for his able and effective leadership of this successful and innovative school district upon the occasion of his retirement as superintendent and extend to him the very best wishes for a happy and enjoyable retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Herb Berg.
