“Applying Critical Thinking Skills to Avoid Confirmation Bias in Credentialing Decision”

Presented by: Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS

Confirmation bias should be avoided in the credentialing and privileging processes because it can lead to poor decisions based on debatable information. One way to avoid confirmation bias is to apply critical thinking skills in credentialing and privileging decisions. This may mean taking the “unpopular” stance on an issue, having to admit that a decision was wrong, or confronting a superior about a decision made. Although these can be uncomfortable actions, failure to admit and correct mistakes can lead to public ridicule and can cause distrust of the organization’s ability to provide safe, effective patient care.

At the completion of this program the participant will be able to:

·  Utilize critical thinking skills in making credentialing and privileging decisions to help avoid “confirmation bias” in making credentialing decisions

·  Define the meaning of transparency as it related to credentialing

·  Recognize how transparency can lead to greater compliance with policies and procedures

9:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Break Kiosk between Regency and Conf Rm D

9:45 a.m. – 11:15 am General Session Regency Room

“Credentialing Allied Health and Complementary and Alternative Medicine Providers”

Presented by: Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS

We often hear that credentialing for Allied Health Professional (APH) and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) providers should be done the same as for other providers. Unfortunately, it is not always that easy. These providers make for some interesting challenges for the MSP.

At the completion of the program the participant will be able to:

·  Discuss the past history and future need for AHP’s and CAM providers

·  Determine the most effective ways to effectively credential and privilege these providers – either through the human resources department of the medical staff office

·  Recognize Joint Commission and Medicare regulation regarding AHP’s

·  Define the role of the AHP specific to their organization

·  Discuss the importance of establishing community need, acceptance by hospital ancillary staff and medical staff when allowing AHPs to function independently

11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. General Session “Malpractice Insurance” Regency Room

Presented by: Mike Egan, CPCU

This session will talk about major malpractice issues including the following:

·  Some professional liability insurance documents indicate no aggregate limit. Most health plans require 1 million per occurrence/3 million aggregate. If no aggregate limit is indicated, what does that mean? Does it mean there is no aggregate limit (skies the limit or that they don’t have aggregate coverage).

·  When a professional liability case is actually considered a case that would require disclosure to a health plan or hospital? Once it’s files, during discovery, or once it’s been determined that there is enough evidence/facts to pursue a case?

·  Does a policy held by the clinic cover all of the clinic’s health care professionals? Or does it only cover those listed on the policy?

·  What is the insurance companies’ process on reporting cases to The Data Bank?

·  Reporting endorsement…why they need them?

·  Claims made versus occurrence?
